Mitsus don't.

Exactly what The Ethereal said, you put the key to start/crank with the pressure fuel line connected to a 2L pop bottle and you'll see exactly what we are talking about, did this to diagnose a pesky ECU situation where the injector drivers went and I didn't want to oversaturate the plugs anymore.

My sonata (4g64) had the exact same symptoms. It ended up being the fuel pump.

I would let the car sit after a run and she would fire right up.
You could install a FPR gauge to see if it is definilty causing the problem or swap out to a cheap stocker.

If you want to try a new fuel pump, I have 2 stock turbo DSM pumps here sitting on the shelf, and I'm only 10 mins away :-)

I cycle the key to run about 10 times then the car starts way better.
Most efi cars fuel pump turns on when you turn the key to "run". Try turning it to "run" and leaving it there for 5-10 seconds before starting. My guess is that the pump is dying.
DSM's dont.
The pump is actionned on start, and will continu when engine is turning.

Did you check your grounds.

ColtMax has a good point on that, me don't think of the obvious reason why an electrical circuit may not be making full time contact for power/ground.

i thought the pump starts when the key is in the "Run" position.... if you follow the "Start" logic, then the fuel pump cuts back off when the key returns to "Run" which just doesn't make sense...

ECU senses/controls the engine running now and triggers the ground to the fuel pump relay to stay on. Start function and run function of the fuel pump are the same grounding technique/function internal to the ECU but it will choose to keep it on or turn it off, based on what it is sensing about the engine catching and running continous.

The only reason you hear the fuel pump when you turn the key is because it's pressurizing the system.
Have you logged at the car when it's off?
My Colt wouldn't idle for the longest time and mad an occaisional mis fire, the logger showed the TPS was toast, even with the car off i could tell.

Throw it on a logger, it never hurts.
