Hi Guys,

Am halfway thru timing belt change: have replaced both cam seals & crank seal.

However, the methods i've found for removing the oil pump sprocket involve wedging a screw driver against the silent shaft (which 4g63' have)to stop the pump from spinning.

4g61's dont have a balance shaft, so whats the best method to remove the nut on the oil pump sprocket in our case ?

Cheers

Get your buddy to hold it and hit with an air gun with a alot of torque.

......no air gun in my camp

is there any other way ?

could i wrap a chain wrench around the sprocket, brace it and use a breaker bar on the nut......is much force required to loosen this nut ?

If there are bolt holes on the sprocket you can thread in bolts to use a long screwdriver/prybar to steady things while the ratchet pulls on the center bolt.

Another way is to jack the car up on the drivers side, get a 6'' 1/2'' drive extension, position the rachet by the control arm and turn the engine over.
Make sure you disconnect your plugs and injectors.
Works like a charm.

thx for the info, but there are no bolt holes in the oil pump sprocket.

also the breaker bar & turning the engine over works for the crank sprocket nut but not for the oil pump sprocket.

I ended up using a chain wrench (that I usually use to remove the sprocket on MTB). Wrapped the sprocket with rags to protect it. Using a breaker bar i was able to break it loose.

Cheers

I just use the old belt, rap it around and hold it tight.
