Bah, trying to sort out a fan control solution is driving me up the wall. I'm tempted to splurge on a fan controller from Jegs and call it a day. My head is spinning.

I really want to run an ECU controlled fan, but it all seems troublesome to me at this point. I'm going to hit up the junkyard on friday and see if I can scrounge up a few things to make it less so. A fan relay from a 2000-2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee is compatible with the PWM fan control of the Evo ecu, and there are a ton of european cars that run slim electric fans.

What is the hold back for what you wanted to accomplish? What part is not working out?

All the parts are good, it's the human interface that's too indecisive and broke  .

I'm trying to find a solution that will work with the DSM ecu AND the Evo ecu, so that I don't have to do anything twice. I'm also trying to find an answer that would satisfy my brain's need to experiment with different solutions. I've forced myself into a spot between a rock and a hard place, lol.

Wandering around the scrappers usually gives me some good ideas, so I'll do that on friday.

It's a big pic, but this is what a Neon 2.0 rad looks like in a Colt. It's a near-perfect fit, which is great :). It's a bit thinner than the stock rad, which also works for me, since I'm limited in clearance for a fan. Very stoked right now :).

I need to get an inline coolant filler for the upper pipe, since the inlet is still much higher than the thermostat housing. Easy peasy!

Well, as much as I'd like to drive my car this spring, I think the front fenders are coming off. I don't like the chassis flex I get when I jack the car up, and I'm fairly certain that I've cut out/replaced all the rotten areas. I know I shouldn't jack the car up by the front crossmember, but when I do, the door droops a fair bit. I don't like that. I think I may try some fender bars going from the outside of the strut mount points, right back to the door hinge bolts.

The best spot I've found to get the whole front end up, is the front support; directly at the front should be a flat pad spot for a jack. Once high enough you can place two jack stands on the lower braces for the control arms. Three solid points of contact.

How are your floor boards? Maybe they are getting soft?
My RF fender to strut tower seam is going to need some attention too.

I thought the floors were in good shape, but maybe I have to inspect the passenger side a bit more. I redid most of the floors from the middle of each side to the new rocker panels, but perhaps there's some softness in the foot kick at the base of the firewall. That's the most obvious spot, but I don't know for sure. I'll start on the bracing once the engine stuff is done and I'm looking for something to do, lol.

I managed to finish the new rad cradle tonight. Now I can run the Neon rad in the stock Colt mounts, and it can be removed in 2 seconds if I want to run a stocker again. Hopefully this weekend I can track down a fan at the scrappers, if I can find time to go.

I'm torn about ECU choice even more now. A fellow on the DSM hacking forum I'm on is working on porting the Evo 1-3 code into the DSM ecu. He's already gotten some basics done, so it's looking good.

Got a bit of tidying done last night. Now the only things missing in the engine bay are the fan and some hoses.

I'm going insane! The car is ready to drive (illegally, lol) and I can't even roll it out into the driveway!

AARRRRRRRRRRGH!

Being a responsible adult sucks :P.

I drove mine around the block the other day. Do it! I was cleaning the winter dust off the paint officer.

Good friday turned into a bad friday. $425 worth of traffic tickets :(.

I won't be finishing the car any time soon, lol. I was a bit bummed so I went to the garage to tinker and found out something I just didn't figure on. I wanted to see if I could improve my intercooler piping so I took the turbo outlet pipe off...and noticed that the gasket didn't line up with the hole. I was using the stock 11b outlet on a 13G turbo, and it apparently didn't fit properly. I grabbed the stock 13G outlet, the 11B, and a 14B one...and found out that they're all different angles/directions. The 14b one works perfectly, and helps reduce my piping a LOT! Now I have TONS of room for a fan, wh00T!

Getting a fan! I gave a buddy a modded Civic race rad and it had a fan on it. He still has it, but doesn't need it. He's gonna flow it back my way, which ROCKS! :D

Now I'm just a few hoses away from being able to drive the car back and forth in the driveway! :D

I have to say, that if someone wants to go to a more tuneable ECU, the 7052 (3G Eclipse/02-04 Lancer/00-?? Mirage/stratus 2.4/evo 8) ecu is a really good option. I've decided to go with mine permanently, instead of starting with the stock eprom ecu. Considering the ecus go for $100(except the Evo 8 one) on ebay, and 1/3 of that in the junkyards, they're a great bit of hardware that can support anything you throw at it.

We at DSMECU.COM are really adding to the info behind this swap, which the evo and DSM crowd have been quite lax with documenting and 'fixing'. If you're considering the swap, check it out. There's waaaaaaaaaaaay more info there than anywhere else ;). Once I get my car rolling, I'll be posting my 4G61T base map as well, to help others with the unloved small engine, lol.

I'm posting all this because I'm super stoked with the whole thing right now. I've gotten the car to fire up on two cranks, even down to freezing...and I've done very little tuning. The 7052 swap is basically a DSM ecu on steroids :).

Getting closer! Since my job sucks, and I'm basically being paid to be a surplus employee (thank your government, fellow Canadians!), I went to the scrappers at lunch. Got a 2000 Neon non-A/C fan and shroud, some coolant hoses, and an inline coolant filler (2000+ Dodge gas trucks). Came to $20! That puts me a LOT closer to the first drive :).
