I was told by JNZ Tuning this past weekend that there is only (1) 4g61 timing belt left in all Mitsubishi USA's inventory! :o If somebody needs one, get it NOW!

I personally decided to go with the Napa (Gates) timing belt because of the quality and above OEM specs that they build their products too. I am sure that most people would disagree, but its all personal preference. After this last belt is sold, there won't be too may other options out there. Rock Auto has also discontinued their Clevite / Perfect Circle belt for this car...... that was the only other belt worth it in my opinion.

What does JNZ know about 4g61's anyways? Not much at all from my experience.

No, they don't. The 4g63's have balance shafts where the 4g61 doesn't. The 4g63 belts are longer.

The balance shafts have nothing to do with it, they both go over the same number of pulleys, just the 61's have a stub shaft through the oil pump instead of a balance shaft.

I believe the deck height is lower on the 61's, but some one please correct me if I'm wrong.

That is correct. I tried to post this earlier from my phone... odd it didn't go.

Either way the deck height is shorter on a 61 than a 63. I'd be willing to guess that the cam gears on a 1.6 are a bit smaller as well. I know the 2.0 and 2.4 use different gears...

You guys are correct..... I forgot that the 4g63 had a separate belt that tied the balance shafts together.

Pretty sure the cams gears on most of the 4g67/61/63 are all the same size, and therefore the same number of cogs for the belt to ride in. The 4g61 belt is 2-3 teeth shorter, due to deck height. 4g64 was just an oddball set of gears. not sure if they were larger or just had different markings ? Be interesting to know if the cam gears are as I mentioned above 100%.

Come on guys. Seriously?

4G63- 153 tooth belt
4G61- 151 tooth belt

The 4G64 is 6mm taller than the 4G63.

The 4G63 is 6mm taller than the 4G61.

All cam gears from all DOHC motors are the same size. Only variance is the timing marks. Remember, hyundai belts are the same OEM quality and are the correct fit for all 1.6L-2.4L sirius family motors. I have one on my car. I also run a Contitech belt on one of my motors. Gatorback belts work well too. I would choose a Contitech though if I had to. No reason other than I like them.
