This morning when I put the keys in the ignition and turned it to start the car, my tach registered 4000 RPM, without starting the car.

When I turned it, I had to give it gas to prevent the engine from stalling. Then the CHECK ENGINE light came on, so I turned off the motor and restarted it. The light went out after I restarted the engine, and I warmed it up to normal operating temperatures, but the idle stayed at 900 RPM.

After I turned off the engine, I heard a low pitched beep inside the dash, then ticking noise inside the engine compartment.

Could this be electrical problems? CAPS? Fuel pump?

The car is bone stock and has 35,000 miles.

Ron

35,000 miles??? Your car is having a major breakdown. You should sell it as soon as you can. I'll even help you out and take it off your hands!

On a serious note, it sounds like it "could be" the ecu caps. It's pretty easy to check. Find a local guy with a '90 turbo talon/eclipse and beg to borrow his ecu for a few minutes.

The ECU is being blamed for A LOT of problems recently. Trust me on this, it's much easier (and cheaper) to prevent this problem then it is to fix these problems.

If you haven't replaced the caps in your ecu, do it as soon as you can. Mileage doesn't effect the caps, so that shouldn't be a consideration. If you can't solder the caps yourself, then you can take it to a local electronics shop and they should do the work for anywhere between $20-$40. That can vary wildly so shop around.

If you don't want to go to a shop, there are several guys on this board who can do it, including myself. If you're a board member, then I'll swap them for $15 + shipping.

Thanks for the replies. I'll pull the ECU out and check it.

Does temperature/humidity affect the ECU? This happened after it started raining here in Los Angeles.

Yes, and overtime heat is what causes the caps to leak.

I checked the caps today...they look ok, except for some discoloration on the bottom. How can you tell if they're leaking?

Should I go ahead and replace these caps?

yes, replace them. Even if they are ok, they WILL go bad (its not a matter if, but when). Do it now while you have it out, as the caps have a 100% failure rate (from my understanding).

I replaced all my caps, but it seems that the board has damaged from the excessive leakage of the 47uF cap.
