Thanks to Joe for lots of parts (complete turbo rear axle, turbo wing, 1.6L thermostat housing, etc) and the great deal! There's the two weekends ago update :)

Now for last weekend! We made some progress on the Colt but Ben is holding the pictures hostage due to his move this week. He'll have those up shortly. We pulled the factory wiring harness, ECU and MPI relay (as well as the dash and heater core to make life easier) and replaced them with the Talon harness, ECU and MPI relay. I removed one of the brackets from the Talon's ECU and got it to mount in the stock location and mounted the MPI relay in a rather trick (if I do say so myself) location between the sheet metal in the passenger kick panel. Finally we've started putting things IN the Colt rather than just tearing it apart :) Sweet!

This weekend we got out to the local (but quite the drive) junkyard in the middle of Honkytonkville (Army surplus store are the neighbors) where there are TONS of CSM/DSM treasures but no CSM/DSMers  This is the same yard from which I pulled my clutch pedal and master cylinder as well as the timing belt and tranny mounts several weeks ago. They had two complete J1 Elantras (before I got to one of them a while ago) from which we took both sets of the mounts, the other for Michael's Colt build (red hair gray shirt), one set of seats for my Colt and the brake master cylinder for what I thought would be an Elantra front upgrade. After getting both motors stripped of their mounts they were left looking completely ravaged. Off to find 1g steering wheels for both of our Colts, Michael and I stumbled upon a complete (minus head) Galant VR4. I was a little saddened to see it there just laid on top of old steelies as if it were nothing special. If I didn't already have one I'd have thought seriously about rebuilding it; though most panels had dings and dents, probably from dumbasses without a clue hitting or bumping it trying to get parts for their 1990 Ford Taurus. Someone had taken all of the identifying badging including the plaque from the dash (sad) but left the complete interior and exterior as well as the block, intercooler, and everything else (oh yes, brakes included ). After getting our 1g steering wheels from the neighboring 1G NTs we took the VR4's front brakes, I took it's '91 taillights for my VR4, we paid our respects and left it to be further stripped from its former glory. Without further ado, the pictures I took from the day:

*high voice* Where's the deep 17mm??? Panic!!!!

Image

Beautiful condition dark gray/light gray two tone J1 Elantra seats for my Colt.

We mounted her and left her

Image

The other Elantra used and abused

Image

A beautiful sight only to a very select few

Image

These things are damn nice, decently light and were $24 each :)

Image

Michael's mantie shot trying to remove the bolt to the rear mount and Bryan finding a piece of new Elantra exhaust for a big breaker bar!

Image

One of the Elantras was already sans transmission so we just pulled the motor for easy access to the rear mount

Image

The man (Bryan) and his breaker bar

Image

Our tunnel to rear mount

Image

Straight faced picture never going to happen

Image

If I don't have to pull another motor for a few months, I'll be OK

Image

My old buddy, sad to see one in this condition

Image

DSM/CSM alley with one other non-VR4, 3-4 CSMs and several 1g NTs in the complete opposite corner of the Elantras in the junkyard. I guess we were the only ones who found that amusing.

Image

That's all for now but as always lots more to come!

Tom

Looks like alot of progress is being made. Aren't those rear mounts a PITA to remove? I've gotten some for other members on here who were not fortunate enough to have nearby junkyards.

I also wish I was close enough to snatch that GVR4 up!

We are definitely making progress! It's good to finally have everything we need to physically install the motor; that's a positive feeling. I've worked with worse but those rear mounts were a pain. Without the other two guys it would've taken forever so having good friends is a good thing! You are definitely up for sainthood if you went to a yard and got mounts for others :wtg: I don't know if I'd drive all the way out there and do it again for any reasonable amount of money, lol.

Yea dude, that was some work getting out those mounts. Atleast we can mount the motors now. I feel bad for that GVR-4 =| I won't feel so bad when the rear brakes are on my car though heh.

Well luckily there was 3 Elantra's at the local yard with the heads already pulled. It's not too bad to get them that way but still a complete PITA. It's kinda funny to see someone standing on an engine pulling on a breaker bar with the engine still in the car.

Rear seat delete! Well, rear seat into the trunk mod :)

Update: I ordered the SPEC "Stage 3" clutch kit rated to 412 ft/lbs and a Fidanza flywheel on Monday. It will be arriving early next week so unfortunately we'll have to wait another week to get the tranny back on and the motor dropped in. We're planning on working on it for most of the day tomorrow so I'll have new pictures probably tomorrow night.

On the note of the turbo axle in the rear seat, wait until you get a V6 in the rear seat. :o http://www.cardomain.com/ride/488838/3

In my colt I've had many transmissions, a 4g64, and turbo mirage axle.

You guys kill me with the one-upping :)

Ok, so here's the scoop from today with pics:

DSM harness happily chillin' in the Colt bay and my N1 style resistor box install, lol. If I didn't install it with the JDM slant it would cover up the plaque :)

Image

The Colt dash after being pulled out a bit for better access to the wiring situation. New turbo cluster to go in along with some tunes; 1g wheel that's on there now will eventually be in the Galant as I got this freebie for the Colt this week:

Image

Image

Here's where it'd be nice for the gurus to clarify for me before I go slicing and dicing...Is the interior wiring from the Colt that is shown bound with electrical tape and consisting of mostly yellow and white wires and the DSM plug in my hand my only concern for making the rest of the car work or am I missing something? I don't want to be chopping shit apart without being certain.

Image

For everyone that's wondered, these are my front stock Colt springs next to 1g AWD Eibach Sportlines. The spring rate is a bit softer on the Colt based on my highly scientific "push on the spring while it's on the ground test" so the drop may not be quite as drastic as it appears.

Image

Here's the Elantra master cylinder and proportioning valve installed on the Colt and the stock Colt master cylinder in hand.

Image

Complete colt assembly next to the GVR4 caliper. I think she'll stop a bit better now :)

Image

All taken apart, ECU and MPI relay in and connected. The rest will get done as soon as I'm sure I won't F anything up!

Image

You'd never know about half of the stuff in this picture started life in another car unless you're from this forum :)

Image

And the first real bit of bling added to the Colt. Elantra seats installed. They are a bolt-on as advertised, however, the seat belt "receivers" that the belt clicks into will need to be swapped as the Elantra receivers are not compatible with the CSM belts.

2 Things:

I'd use the Elantra Booster as well it fits and has a higher boost ratio will firm up your colt pedal signifigantly. Use the spacer from the colt no the elantra else you'll have problem. You'll also need to get under the dash and adjust your brake light witch at the pedal for the new booster other than that your good.

Second

Those springs will drop your car about 2.5" in the front and leave you almost at the bump stops (Trimmed bump stops at that) I'd suggest not using them.

Cool I'll go snag the booster as well, thanks for the tip! And I know it's an extreme drop but that's what I like. Every car I've owned has been slammed on its nuts and that's just the way I like it. My stock Colt shocks are so dead they can't even support the weight of the top hats so I was able to see how far down they would travel before bottoming on the trimmed bumpstops. The Eibach springs would have to be at least 3-4" shorter to be sitting on the bumpstops and that's plenty of travel for my intentions with this car. We'll see how it goes :)

Any thoughts on the wiring situation?

Tom

Didn't have anything else lined up for today so we made some more progress on the Colt. We decided to just dive in to the wiring and managed to get all of the interior end of it done. Took us a bit to sort through it all but with the help of Karl's diagram - http://www.4g61t.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13766 we got it figured out. Since I'm using a '91 harness the 6 and 14 pins on the C-50 plug were switched from the schematic.

Wiring finished and loomed back up

Image

Wiring finished and dash most of the way back in

Image

The shock is compressed to the bumpstop so from the top of the hat to the top of the spring will be suspension travel. I think that's definitely workable.

Ordered the intercooler, 22"x9"x3" with 2.5" inlet/outlets, and three 2.5" SS UJ bends to fab up IC piping today as well as the 1g AWD GR-2s for the rear. The shocks are in stock at our local warehouse so we'll have those to complete the suspension this weekend except for the panhard rod.

Oh and I left this one out from the weekend. We jus' keepin' it real.
