For any car audio nuts out there...

I'm ditching my 2x 12" JL Audio W0's this winter after bumping them for about a year and a half...and I'm relocating my amp from under the driver seat to the trunk.

Im trying to decide which 12" sub to get next-

JL W6

Alpine Type X

Alpine Type R

MTX 9500

Any others? Gimme some advice.

since im bored and its currently the commercials for "the simpsons," i'll throw some info in this tread....for any driver(speaker or sub), the lighter and harder the cone, the better response your going to get. Paper has been long used cause of its cost, and therefore you always get ripped cones all the time. basic rule of thumb is that if the cone has a larger surface, your going to have more mid/midbass/bass. So of course 8 sub will sound louder then a 6.5 sub(not always). Depending on what type of music you listen to, certain subs will best suit your taste. for instance...if you like rock or other type of songs with long rumbly bass, a larger sub will be better off for you. But for a person like me, which means a person who likes tight hard hitting and competition type bass, your best bet would be to find smaller subs and having two or more(if needed). Compare two 8's pounding out bass v. a 15 sub in even a large box, the two 8's will pound even harder since its got one inch more cone serface area and since its distributed equally, it would have a much tighter and accurate bass note. Most of the time, you can't really say which sub is better then which untill you find out what you usually listen to and what is better suited for you. Two subs i usually recommend to people is the Diamond Audio D9 and the MTX 9500. Why? quick and easy answers i can give is cause the D9's cone is made out of kevlar(remember what i said earlier about cone material) and the fact that diamond audio always makes best bang for the buck products. MTX 9500 is known to out perform the JLW7 and its other name is "the SLEDGEHAMMER."

PS, i would normal never buy most of the audio products you find in most retialer store(i.e. alpine, kenwood, pioneer, clearion, etc)

For all you guys looking for something cheap yet serious, diamond audio has D3 8 inchers for 65 bucks each. A single 8 isn't going to do much if you dont have the mid's to back it up or anything at all so, i'd suggest pairing it up to 2 or more. Save yourself the trunk space and just get 2 or 3. Kicker L7 8's are a bit upgrade but of course they cost a lot more. So if your willing to pay for them, then good luck finding a dual/tripple 8 box and look into Beyma instead if you willing to pay for the Kickers

Good info crackerman. I guess I'm not the only one who views Car Audio as a side-passion next to cars.

I've wanted a 12" type X for a while, but I can't find one for a good deal in very many places. I've had 2 twelves for a while, and they were put together on a budget system. I decided to get something harder hitting, without a lot of clutter. One sub, one amp, and one 2 farad cap. Nothing extreme, just something to put in the trunk. I've been looking for a good performer 12", and I KNOW what to buy and what not to buy. Haha, I won't be getting any Sony Xplod's anytime soon.

I never really got a clear answer though, anybody recomend a good 12" to bump with in the trunk?

I was kicking Phoenix Gold gear back in the day, pricey and well worth it. Phoenix is distributed by Trends ... something - you could get people feeling you from 4 blocks away because of your sub 20 hz frequencies pounding being recreated in proper distance fashion. The car that had me sold was a Corrado with a custom wood (2/4 + fibreglass) concoction sporting 5x 15" X Max carbon fiber subs, 5 ".5" 2000w amps, and 6 extra batteries in the trunk. Let's just say that the day I figured out what these subs could do, (what a smell coming from the car when this guy pulled up) turned out to be a sub that was fused so hard that it could be punched and not moved. That is not to say that this shows sound quality but I researched and pestered the audio guys in my area for over 1 year and finally got a system put together. The source equipment was on a budget but it was a serious contender on the other. I was finally most interested in SQ vs SPL because I did compile 4x 10" glass aramid cones Phoenix woofers in a Med-Bandpass box sporting two 11"x 4" air tubes. I could drain both my front battery and my isolated one (via the Phoenix competition 14.4 vdc bussbar array - still in storage) in under 5 mins, to the point where my 90 amp alternator was bouncing off the lower end of 9+ volts. When I gave sound advice here, it was because of all the mistakes and good reasons that people should upgrade to accomodate all the elements of their system and it fully intended use, so as to not stress the system as a whole.

Why do really good systems sound so good?

Designed using good principles:
simplicity,
isolation of NVH/electrical radiation induced from outside sources,
clean sound and high voltage transfer for noise rejection,
clean ground system that is not improperly shared,
proper fusing design and execution,
source equipment that is capable of the sound you expect and then can be transfered down the line,
you are only as clean and clear and close to the original source material as it was recorded if you follow these principles.

You don't necessarily have to choose a brand per say, just be sure that most people don't have problems with what you are buying. Have a place to test it out, even better if the shop has a similarily equipped box that you can just drop in your car to have a listen with before deciding, and finally, is it worth the money.

By all means go to your nearest audio superstore and grab a name you trust, you won't be disappointed as long as you buy something that is designed for the type of listening you do.

Lastly, enjoy your hearing while you have it. My ears used to be very sensitive so I adjusted my adolescent volume level to that of just shy of what the Police would pull you over for, but I think I should have just gotten over my testerone in that respect much sooner. Clean sound with a great setup doesn't have to be so loud you can't hear anything inside or out of the car you ride in. My two, three and four cents worth .... :finga:

since most of you are bass freaks, and akdriverjd wants only ONE 12, then i'd probbaly have to recommend the beyma xmas 12 as one of the subs i'd personally get IF i was looking for a 12. now that is a pretty well built sub!

http://www.usspeaker.com/homepage.htm

but honestly though...you can save yourself the money by geting smaller subs like i mentioned before and build a good box by yourself or with some help. like a 6th order vented isobaric camber/enclosure...

I think you should stick with 1 12 rather than 2. I only have one because I had 2 before and the bass totally outweighed my highs. I replaced all the speakers in the car to improve my highs and the subs ruined it for me. Plus, then you can get a JL w7? or whatever the highest up one is...they sound amazing. Or get the alpine with the carbon fiber cone...can't remember what they're all called. I upgraded last winter because some little bitches stole everything I had so it's been a while since audio was on my mind. I needed something new anyway so it's alright.
