Whats up everyone? I posted this thread at MPF as well but did not get as much responses as I hoped for. Seeing as you guys were the lucky ones to get a turbocharged vehicle, I figure you guys would have more expertise in the matter

Hey all, in this thread I want to go over what all is needed when you want to rebuild your engine with boost in mind for it. I know the usually beefier rods and lower compression pistons etc but what else can you do to make your turbo motor basically indestructable (or as close to that as possible) Im new to rebuilding engines in general(I wont be rebuilding an engine until next year probably) but I just want to do some researching now and I want to hear from you turbo peeps that have rebuilt yore motor to withstand high boost levels. I want this to be a fairly informative post obviosuly. Ill probably make a post for N/A engine rebuild and auto and 5spd tranny rebuild in their respective forums if you guys want me too.

With that said, lets all get learned! (Or rather, learn me lol)

Any reason you don't want to start with a turbo engine? They aren't very expensive.

What do you mean? I'm not lucky to have a turbo engine for my year mirage like you guys(At least not in NA anyways...). I shoulda specified this in my first post sorry. I have a 1998 Mitsubishi Mirage 5g 4g93 SOHC N/A normally.

Nothing too crazy, our cars are so light we don't need rediculous power. Honestly I'd be pretty happy with 200-250. My wanting to rebuild another engine is mainly just to know that I never really have to worry about my engine ever again. I love my car so I wanna make sure it lasts cause Im never selling her :)

Ah, I was thinking you had a 3G nt. If you just want 250hp you may not need to do anything. If it were me, I would install cheap eagle rods, forged pistons, ARP head studs, and be done with it. This way when you want to make more power later you could.

There's no other kind of services you would do? Like blue printing, port job etc? I want to do this right the first time so I don't have to take the head off again just to do something I coulda done when the head was off the car you know? I do say Id be happy with 200-250 now but boost is boost and I'm addicted lol.

You could do all that. I assumed the engine was in pretty decent shape. I would replace the rings/bearings etc. but probably would stop there unless the car has a ton of miles on it and burns oil.

For a 98 my car only has 82000 ish miles, but Im not sure of the mileage on the spare engine/head Im gonna buy. Should I just find another whole engine assembly or just get the head?

IF that's the case and you want to build an engine that's in somewhat of an unknown condition, then I would have the head rebuilt and have the block machined. You can take your time since you'll be working on the spare engine.

If you haven't tackled anything like this and will be truly doing on your own, you have a lot of reading to do. You probably won't get all the answers you want in one thread :)

Haha - well if that's the case then price it out and do what you can afford. The cheapest would be what I originally suggested.

Forged rods and pistons, those stock bits won't hold up to much unless you never plan on going over 5psi. You could swap in a 4g63t, it's been done before.

My wife's 02 Lancer has the 4G94 in it and it's a dog of a car. Granted it's a 4 door but come on Mitsu, 120 hp? WTF? Anyway, when she snapped the timing belt at 107,000 miles I replaced the head with a 4G93 with 18,000 miles on it. The 4G93 cam is considered the first stage upgrade as per that Mitsu place in Austrailia. But I have to say that these engines won't accept much boost unless the internals are strengthened. Also, with a used block you WILL run into trouble unless you have all of the gaps, bores, and clearances checked between the block and the head. Trust me, it's happened to me before with one of my Civics. Once that is complete and the shop says that it's a good head and block, then you know what to order aftermarket internal parts for. I understand that money is always an issue but if you want to go big (or mildly big), you have to have some cheese.

Yes, but it is a lot easier to do so with a 4g mirage than a 5g. Our stock motors can handle 10 psi but you obviously want to be tuned.

Yea, trust me I will def have some cheese once I grad and get a job in my field, but dont underestimate our engines, they are pretty stout :) but I know its just the smart thing to get stronger internals for sure. That place you are talking about in Aus is RPW.

Sorry I havent posted in this trhead in awhile guys :(
