...and an equally semi-free surplus AEM water meth pump :). I love days at the shop.

Making a MAF-to-SD adapter harness currently. Hacked up a 1G MAF (that hurt to do, but there's no way I'm hacking my 61T one) for the connector, used a soldering iron with a flat blade on it to melt the plastic to get to the pins, soldered wires to them, double heat-shrinked everything, made a mold around the connector with cardboard, and filled that with Goop. Once it's dry, I'll put a layer of electrical tape around it and call it a day :). Pics tonight!

Also, compared a stock 61T MAF to a 4G63 N/A one, and they're identical except for the extra pin in the turbo MAF. Neat :).

Back on it's wheels, wh00T!
Image

The poly control arm bushings I made fit perfectly, and everything lined up like it should. Before I assembled everything, I took a wire wheel to ALL the bolts used in the front end. Also, any bolts that go through a metal sleeve got a coating of moly grease so they don't seize up again. I was also pleasantly surprised when I went to put on the new tie rod ends...no seized hardware :).

The bay, in the sun:
Image

I need to get a few things for the bay (new fuel filter, etc), and install the new speedo cable, before I can get to work on reassembling the engine...but it's getting there!

[edit]Dammit...I completely forgot about the nasty rocker I have to replace...fack.[/edit]

Patched the floor last night. Now there's nothing but the rocker panel left to do, so I can't put it off any more :(. I can weld and fabricate, but if I want this to look good, then I need patience. I do not possess this quality, lol. Fingers crossed it looks half decent when I'm done...

Anyone have a parts car I can cut a piece from? The junkyards here are colt-free :(.

You get it close enough and the skirts will cover it all. :)

This is going to sound blasphemous...but I don't like the GT skirts  . I find the lack of any rear bumper treatment makes the spoiler/skirts look out of place. It's not really a problem though, since the ever-practical 80 year old previous owner threw them away when the rockers started to rust  . This GTT is incomplete :(.

I used a contour gauge and some 2x6 to make up a wooden buck to shape the new rockers, so if I work slowly...I should be able to fabricate some nearly-exact copies of the current panels. I don't have any metal right now, but once I get some, I'll post up pics of the panels I make. Maybe this weekend...depends on the budget. I'd like to use proper 20-18ga metal.

So I started on the rocker panel replacements. This was an intimidating first step, because I have a lack of patience and experience when it comes to metalwork that's supposed to look good. The two panels I made actually look good, and are the same curve as stock :).

Step #1, put a 90* fold in the sheet.

Step #2, put the wooden buck in the vice, and close the jaws to start the shape. Heat the metal with a torch (I used MAPP gas), and hammer the curve into it. I used a piece of exhaust pipe and a hammer, to keep the hammer from marking the metal. Amazingly, it worked :).

Now I have to figure out the best way to attack the rotten rockers, so that there's a minimum of bodywork required. I can't stand sanding, lol.

Turns out there isn't any solid metal to attach my nice new panels to...kill me now. >:(

My rust free shell was up for sale/partout for months and not one person needed any parts so I sent it to the crusher. I even offered to grab my brother's plasma cutter and cut out rockers or quarters for anyone.

Ah well, I was too slow I guess, lol.
As it turns out, there's a LOT of welding to do until I have to worry about rockers :(. From the driver's seat to the firewall is a mess, and most of the inner rocker is gone too. Last night I started cutting out the rotten stuff and discovered that it was a bit more rotten than I figured. Luckily, metal is easy to replace, so it just means a bit more work, but hey...that's the part I like best anyway :).

I like the challenge, and when it's up and running, the sense of satisfaction will be even greater :). I'll dig out the DSLR and snap some pics tonight.

FINALLY feeling more human, so I did a bit of work. It's not pretty, but at least the floor is once again attached to the inner rocker. I am going to have to fab up a new pinch weld area, but so far everything is going well :). The welds look a little cold, but that's just due to the fact that I suck at overhead welding. I have some burns on my neck that will attest to that.

What it looks like currently:

The rest of the rocker:

The other side isn't as bad...but I think it's going to end up requiring the same work.

Thanks for posting up all these pictures!!

What kind of welder are you using? It looks like you've gone thru a few places, I can understand if you have; I'm trying to weld up my awd conversion and have blown thru more than once. (I'm thinking ahead more now and trying to weld from the top down because its hard to weld from underneath).

Keep up the good work.

Yep, it's blown through a lot. It's a lincoln 140, running .025" wire and 75/25 gas. The big problem I'm having is prep, in that I can't get the base metal clean enough, so it's tough to keep the heat down. I'm already using the lowest heat I can use without wire feed issues, so I basically just try to do the best I can.

All the stuff that's welded to clean metal comes out great though. If I had proper replacement panels I could have cut more rot out before starting, but I kinda cheaped it. The floors are all going to be covered with seam sealer anyway, lol. The rockers will be done a LOT better, since all the thin older metal will be gone :).

I also have to add, that overhead welding SUCKS, lol.

So, I'm being tempted by the fact that the EVO 8 ECU can be used in a 1G DSM (with some creative wiring). I've taken a peek at the software used (ecuflash), and I love the full-on open-ness of the Evo 8 binaries...
