Hey guys,
This is my first post, (newbie talking), and i just wanted to share info about a radiator upgrade I performed on my plymouth colt recently. A radiator upgrade might be your first step into upgrading to a 4g63(hope so).
The old radiator, thin nippon-denso, opened up at the superior clamps and would shoot streams of steam. My brother had a junked DSM nearby with a good radiator. so I put that one in.
If you do this, you'll need the radiator, water outlet(thermostat housing), and other tidbits you can grab from a 90-93 2.0 NT laser/eclipse/talon.
You just remove the radiator, fans, upper and lower radiator hoses, and the water outlet from your 89-92 c/s/m and of course drain the antifreeze.
You put the 4g15's fans and temperature sensor from the old radiator and put it into the DSM radiator. The fans aren't quite a bolt-on. YOu may use some snips or dikes to make relevant holes to bolt the fans on. And on the bigger fan you'll need to tie the inferior portion with bailing wire. All in all, the fans are held in place nicely. The temperature sensor is a bolt-on affair.
After installing the radiator, you'll need to make some inserts for your top mounts. I used gasoline hose for it. I took the gasoline line from the fuel filter from the DSM. I cut about a 3-inch portin and stuck it on the top radiator knobs and inserted the other side into the top radiator supports. This way you can use your old top radiator supports.
The last major mod you do is installing the DSM water outlet. The new outlet matches perfectly with the thermostat. However, you'll need to bend the c/s/m fuel line for it to fit properly. Me and my brother used crescents for it, and it was difficult. Maybe pipe bender might make this task easier. Also, you'll need to grind some material of the DSM water outlet with a lime. That is about the most difficult thing you'll do.
Lastly, you connect the radiator hoses, sensors, and fan relays. You can use both radiator hoses from the c/s/m. The lower hose is basically plug and play. But the top radiator hose is a bit more difficult to put in. I guess you use the DSM hose if you don't want to struggle using the c/s/m hose.
The old radiator cap can be used, but needs to have a ear clipped and bent upwards. The pressure relief line, that goes to the thermostat housing doesn't reach the overflow chamber. so you might want ot use the DSM relief line.
Filling the radiator is different. You may be able to add fluid through the radiator cap, but if you want to do it quicker, you'll disconnect the upper radiator hose from the water outlet and pour it in there.
I've had better cooling responses from my plymouth colt, i guess this upgrade might work for gt cars too. Maybe, if there's enough room for the larger DSM radiator.
