Hello everyone.

I never ventured into the Wagons 'n Vans section of this forum before. I have a 89 mirage Hatch which I have a big project for next year, so I have been on this website before. Also have a 1992 Galant VR4 which has been heavily modified and I am pretty familiar with that platform.
And then about a month ago a guy posted this 92 summit awd for sale and I picked it up for CHEAP. Seemed so cheap that I just couldn't pass it up. I ended up selling my 1997 Eagle Talon so I could bring in this project.

So I have been looking through the pages now to try and get familiar with certain things 4G63 6 bolt swap.. I have yet to find much as the search feature on these forums always leaves me lost.

To start I will not be using the Auto trans from this so if anyone needs one I would probably want to sell it along with the transfer car. Possible the rear diff also if it's not compatible with the 1g rear diff (still need to research this). I have a 1g Engine harness that will be swapped in so the summit harness will also be available.

I will be starting on this project next week when I actually go pick up the van from the owner.

Plans:

6 Bolt - 2.3 Stroker - same as I have in my Galant and it's amazing
Kelford 272s full race port head 1mm over size valves
JMF Intake manifold
Haltech Sport 1000 with RacePak cluster
1G AWD manual transmission with a twin disc
DSS driveshaft and possibly axles if I cannot use the 1G stuff (which from reading 2 posts they don't work)
And all supporting mods Intercooler, BOV, etc, etc, etc. Looking to built it to support 750 HP with a BorgWarner T3 turbo.


If anyone has tips or can post links to engine mount info, shift cables for the manual swap, wiring diagram for 1G harness to Summit chassis harness, Rear diff info, shocks/strut options. Or anything else I would appreciate that. I will be searching as much as possible myself as I go through the project to make plans.

Nice!

DSS make a driveshafts for these vans? Even if they did, why would you need one?

Rear end is completely different from DSMs :(

DSS makes custom drive shafts for anything you want.

Id prefer aluminum DS for less rotating weight.

Thanks for the info on the rear diff. I have a 1g diff I guess I will see if it mounts up or if we need to make custom mounts.

There is another thread where I am discussing using 3000GT rear end components. If you are going to make up custom parts, make it BIG!

As for DSS driveshaft, I had bad experience with it. It isn't a bad product, but it using it presents some issues! If you are in the realm of breaking transfer cases (as most people who buy DSS driveshaft are), you have to keep in mind that those will often damage your yoke. DSM yokes are $35 (part of recall kit). Where as DSS yokes are $150... Make sure to have one (or two) on hand as a spare!

On a 9 second car that I raced for a friend back in 2008/2009, we got caught with a twisted yoke after transfer case failure and didn't have a spare. In desperation, we borrowed a good stock driveshaft and finished weekend racing. We NEVER went back to DSS shaft... Stock unit gave us years of reliable service (though we went through a couple of yokes).

This is one of those items that is pretty and make sense on paper, but in real life, it should be avoided in most cases!

the DSS yoke is a stock yoke that has a 1310 splicer welded on. makes sense it would be weaker.

I do not know if they are actually weaker or not, but when they do break they are more troublesome and expensive to repair.

I know of a few peoppe with DSS driveshafts and non of them have had issues. I would guess that if you are drag racing competitively ofcourse you will put any product through serious abuse. I have no plans to race competitively so hopefully I do not have issues like this.

The L200 is my work truck I bought but it isn't here in the United States. I live part time in South America (Ecuador) and I drive that for work sales trips all over the country. It's a bad ass truck, I wish I could bring it to the USA.

So can anyone point me to a thread or know if the 1G DSM rear diff and axles are a bolt in deal? I am going 5 speed swap with 1g bits and just want to confirm before I start taking down the rear subframe and getting to work.

Those trucks are nice. The 1g rear is nowhere near a bolt in deal and would have to be custom fitted.

the only thing we know for sure about these rear ends is it is unique to the vehicle. you may want to keep your rear axles and just swap in the 5spd 3.54 ring and pinion in the rear. the 1g axles are not correct length. if you car happen to be a 1.8 engine it would already have a 3.54 rear. the 2.4 came with 3.3.

This van is a 2.4 so I would need to swap the ring and pinion. Would absolutely be an easier thing to do than make the 1G rear diff fit and then do axles.

Thanks for that info, it will save me a bunch of time.

Now hopefully the axles can take some abuse.

Been a while since I updated this.

The swap is complete and the car runs. We did the following

Swapped Ring gear to 5 speed DSM
Manual Swapped shifter and cables and used a 1g AWD gear box
Fabricated solid engine mount in the front
Used 1G Avid tuner engine mounts for the driver / passenger
Fabricated Intercooler pipes for using a Buschur racing backdoor intercooler
Fabricated 3 inch downpipe and catback section that dumps out the driver side behind the driver door
Fabricated some radiator brackets out of aluminum so the 1g radiator would work.

Engine build is
6 bolt short block with Ross pistons, eagle rods, on a OEM 2.0 crank. OEM oil pump, front case. L19 headstuds with a Flat Out head gasket
6 bolt head with Ferrea valves, Crower springs/retainers, Kelford 272 cams, Fidanza cam gears, Mitsubishi valve cover with -12 AN fitting for catch can setup

Boost goodies
FP red turbo (25 psi on pump, 30 psi on E85)
FP exhaust manifold
Tubular o2 housing
Precision Wastegate
Buschur racing back door intercoolerwith 2.5 inch piping
Tial BOV

Fuel System
FIC 1650 injectors
Walbro 450lph in tank pump
-8 feel line
-8 filter
stock fuel rail with -8 fitting welded on
stock return line. planning to run a non return system (via stand alone ecu)

Driveline
1G AWD gearbox (stock for now)
ACT flywheel, ACT 2600lb pressure plate, ACT street disc
Stock drive shaft
1G rear diff ring gear swapped
1G stock axles in the front
Summit rear axles

Tunning / Wiring
Spitronics stand alone ecu.
Spitronics lead harness married to OEM sensor plugs from a spare 1g harness
PLX combo gauge with Air/Fuel and Boost
Stock chassis harness
