Cage is complete. All that is left, is welding in a couple of gussets, and the seat belt mounting tabs. Once those are complete I am going to pain the cage a hammertone Grey or silver.

Onto the pictures. The two rear down bars, come out at 43degrees from the main hoop, they then change direction on the 15 degree plane which attaches at the floor where the "unibody frame rails" exists ( that angle is 32 degrees). The Notching and cutting on this was a pain ( Ended up screwing up two bars of pipe ( 4 foot sections of chromoly, because of my stupidity).

I love this picture, showing all the bars
Image

some of the weld details.

my bad ass Punisher gussets.
Image

and of course you can't forget about this little gusset :)
Image

With the seats in it. I do plan to have a horizontal bar, in between the two rear bars and then eventually tie that to strut towers.
Image

Total build time, is a few ticks above 73 hours of work. I would imagine that the painting etc will take a few more. But I am glad to put this one behind me.

Taking It out for a drive yesterday was awesome, this thing is significantly stiffer than what it was before.

Just wondering on why you didnt tie the rear bars into the rear strut towers?

The Frame rail is a stronger point versus the strut tower. I also wanted the down bars to be in as much of the perpendicular plane as possible. I might integrate the strut towers into these down bars later, but I wanted them to be on a secondary plane versus being the attachment point of the primary.

My strut tower caps have been repositioned also. Last year they began to crack in the heat affected zone below the weld. I then reinforced that area with 1/8" steel plate to give it a little more structure. I noticed that you have cut your strut tower caps as well I would highly recommend you reinforce those as well.

i already put .120 thick plate on it to bridge the two pieces
I planned on tying my cage to them so i would be welding another plate on them to strengthen them.
And then bars from where the cage meets the strut tower down to the 2x2 square tubing for the rear end
That's why i was asking why you did it the way you did

I understand what you are saying. In my case the perpendicular method was a better option. it should work in either method though

This past weekend, I went to a bracket race event in Milan. I was finally able to get this car into the 10s which I am pretty happy about, knowing the condition of the engine.

The motor is a tired old girl, with one cylinder being pretty bad at 78% leakdown through the rings and another cylinder having about 36% leakdown through an exhaust valve. Knowing this a bunch of boost was thrown at the engine to compensate.

Mods
2.0 2g pistons and 1g rods.
HKS 272s with crower springs.
FP3065 on stock manifold with 3 inch exhaust ( 37-42 psi of boost to compensate for poor cylinders)
RC 1200s with a single 255 on C16 FUEL
Magnus intake manifold, with ETS fmic
ACT 2900 with organic street disc, TRE trans with 24.5 M&H slicks

Weight was 2660 with me in it and the last VD numbers at 34psi were 518HP.

if you would like to see video of the three runs, I have them on facebook, located here on sept 7th
https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100006713470263

Enjoy and it amazes me how awesome the good ol 4g63 is

What a day at the track.

Being the end of October, I wanted to make one final attempt on getting further into the tens with the car. The expectations were to go out on a sunday doing what I love- Drag racing the colt.

Woke up bright and early at 5:00 am to start prepping tools, fluids and the general track gear that is required. -only to find that the battery for the colt ( was virtually dead) - Great way to start the day . After fidgeting with the charger and lines - I was able to get about 60% battery life, which then fired up the car. The plugs were definitely fouled out, so Jeremy took it for a quick drive around the neighbourhood to "clean the plugs" - I m sure the neighbors hated me on that early sunday morning Image

Get to track unload the car- and my goodness was it just a beautiful day, air temps were about 50 degrees and rising, sunny , low humidity - perfect for the colt that was about to get its butt kicked.
After returning from getting teched-- I wanted to change the rev limit on the car to about 8300, as I had a feeling we would be bumping that. Low and behold, when we went to flash the car.. the damn ECU got bricked. ( Its a good thing that I had an extra computer in the tool box) just for such events. The computer got bricked because there was not enough voltage in the battery for it to get flashed
Image

There was some gorgeous cars out there, tons of mustangs even this new turbo 4 cylinder roush mustang
Image

Image

The guys next to us were running a vega that had a 350 and were spraying. definitely one bad ass machine.
Brian warming up the nitrous with a map torch :)
Image

First pass out for me yielded a 11.2x @ 129.. the car was breaking up badly.. so we changed the plugs, and turned up the boost some more ( 44psi) .

The next pass yielded a 10.41 @ 134 mph Holy shit we were soo pumped because this just beat the cars all time ET by almost 3 tenths of a second. Not to mention we hit a 1.47 sixty foot ( another PB) .
Image

Next pass out -- decided to give a little more duty cycle about 76% which mathematically yielded about 46 psi through the 3065. Who really knows what the boost was, because I only have a 4 bar map sensor. Dropped the tire pressure and went to out .

On the line, I wanted to ensure that I gave as much slip as I could, , the minute I let that clutch out, I could tell it was a good 60', rode that rev limiter , and smashed 2 nd gear.. took a quick glance at the fuel pressure - which was now around 84 psi.. all I could think to myself two more gears to go-- don't screw up.. clean shift on number three, and this is when the power started to pour in , I almost NLTS 4th but choose not to, almost put my foot through the floor, even banged my head against the cage. :) Getting my time slip .. Holy shit 10.20s @ 133... but I was really geeked about, was that 60', 1.40s are the best I have EVER hit with any car, from the auto FWD to my old evo.
Image

Time for some beer to celebrate . I just thought to myself.. This is a cheapest car I have, with left over parts and it has given me the BEST ET to date, after the 1000s upon 1000s of dollars I have spend over 15 years on my other cars. Go figure right? It is a great feeling that I want to share with all of you.
Image
Winter mods are now in effect . the colt is getting a 2.3 engine with a nasty cylinder, if I am feeling spunky it might be time to place a 35r on it .

Thanks for reading and its days like this that remind me of what a great sport drag racing is. Meeting awesome people, problem solving and sharing a passion that can only be described as exhilarating.

Awesome job, what tires were you running? I had no clue the 3065 would be okay running that much boost. Haha

M&H racemasters 24.5 by 15s .

I don't know if the poor 3065 is ok at that boost level either lol :) 4.0PR is definitely way outside the compressor map

Man you crushed my time! Good stuff man. I tried to hit the track one last time a couple weeks ago and ended up with a broken U-Joint first pass.
