Ah, the memories. Is it running or is a swap in it's near future?

I fixed my distributor!

The issue with it was weak spark. Upon disassembly I found that the coil was burnt up. I happened to have a distributor from a SOHC 4g64 sitting around. A few Phillips-head bolts later and I have two identical coils on my bench. Reassemble the 4g15 distributor, install in the car, hit the key and it worked!

To recap:
The coil in the distributor of the SOHC 4g64 is the same as the coil found in the distributor of the 4g15.

This is very beneficial for the SOHC 1.5/2.4(maybe more) guys as new distributors are around $190. A new distributor cap and rotor button costs less than $30 at AutoZone, swindle yourself into a $25(or less) coil at the local junk yard and you have a functioning dizzy for around $55. Granted, a brand new unit SHOULD last a lot longer, but you could use this method almost 4 times before incurring costs equal to what a new unit would be.

It occurred to me today that I have a 16 valve SOHC 4g64 from an Expo just sitting around... HMMMMMM.......

I know I have read about this exact scenario on this forum, but have yet to find a thread(I'm still looking!) Is this swap going to be as easy as I am imagining?

Found a build thread by uweenukr that shows his 3g hatch with a 7 bolt 2.4l in it. It is pretty much plug-and-play except for the engine mounts. Nothing my welder and a 12 pack can't fix.

What year is this colt? I know the wiring for the 12v engine is different than the 8v. Pretty sure the 2.4 7 bolt will need the 12v wiring. I also borrowed his idea on the front engine mount for my wagon. Mine is slightly different but the same idea. Been working flawlessly for about 10k miles.

This is a '92 with a 12v. I think the 7 bolt 2.4 uses a 2g-style MAF, but the difference in wiring should only be one wire.

Still haven't layed a single hand on this except to add oil as needed. Been driving it every day to work and other errands. It is super nice to have a little hatch-back to run around in. I almost can't bring myself to take it apart. Especially with it netting around 30mpg. This number should be higher, but my daily commute involves a lot of hills, and a couple of them are long and steep. Poor little 1.5l engine can't make it unless the trans is in 2nd gear(it only has 3).

If I could go back, when my little colt's trans went out I would have just replaced it with a 5 speed one from a 4g csm. I'd still be driving that thing right now with shiny white paint and 30+ mpg. Instead I tore it down to swap it, didn't have the time or money to do it correctly and completely lost interest and crushed it.

My vote, drive it like you stole it and enjoy it. You have other fast cars in the driveway don't you?
