Hi there, I just have a question to those who have done swaps that live in Ontario. Did you notify your insurence agents? If so what did they say? Im going to be doing a 4G63T swap into a Hyundai Excel hatchback, and Im curious to hear what you guys are paying? Also is there any way for the insurence company to find out that you did a swap unless they actually look at the engine bay (which they didnt for my tiburon).

Thanks.

I'd try a search using "insurance" as your keyword as there was a lengthy thread concerning this a while ago - holler if you need more direction than this. 8)

I read that long post about the insurance problem in Canada. Sucks for yall cause I'm only paying $50 a month here in VA for liability only, and I'm 22yrs old. It pays to have a flawless driving record and good credit.

Without having answered your initial question, I pay a total of
<25 years old = $135 CAN monthly
>25 years old = $75 CAN monthly
1992 Colt 200e 2 door with a 4g15 motor + 5 speed transmission
Plus I live in one of the highest insurance zones in all of Canada I'm sure. Ottawa surpassed Toronto as the worst driving city in Canada awhile back. Too many yuppies on cell phones and shuttle bus drivers that use their motors like sport bikes - but I won't elaborate on what I do for a living right now!

P.S. never buy a demo, NEVER buy a demo!

in ontario, if you disclose the modifications to your insurance company, they will cancel the policy. this started earlier this year, and haven't heard anything to suggest things have changed.

a few months ago, someone was trying to set up a co-op insurance company to provide motorsports coverage, including modified cars, but it seems to have gone real quiet lately (see top sticky):

So if I have an excel, and I drop the 4G63T into it and tell them, they cancel my insurance?

Yep, that's about it. Don't tell them (in fact, don't even call them and ask "what if"!), don't claim anything, and for god's sake don't have an accident. Pay them their exhorbitant fees and pray they leave you alone.

Insurance companies in Ontario right now have it made - it's illegal for us NOT to give them money and they are under no obligation to give us anything back!

I'd sooner give my hard-earned cash to the government!

Yup thats how it is. As I was getting my insurance for my tib about a year and a half ago, the agent was telling me how much it would cost. Then she like "but that price will go up in a few months" I ask "why" she says that " the government is freezing the rates so we cannot hyke them up any more". Then I say " so why are the rates going up?" She says " well we got to raise the rates one last time bofore it was too late."

looks like the idea is starting to get off the ground:

"If you are using your car for Solo1,Solo2 or have It modified in any fashion, lowering, engine swap, rollbar or just Bling,Bling we have obtained legal insurance coverage for your ride.

If your current insurance company does not know about your motorsport involvment Solo1,Solo2,Rally or your vehicle modifications you will most likely be denied coverage If you make a claim.

You may even be liable for any damages you have caused if you are found at fault in an accident.

If you are hiding the truth from your insurance company we have an answer for you.

We are not just looking for Modified cars to insure. We are looking for every day vehicles as well.

Minivans,pickup's,regular cars etc.

We go into full detail at www.solocanada.ca"
