I'm sure some of you guys that frequent other forums have seen this already but if not, here goes. We picked this up 2-3 weeks ago about an hour away for $1500. It needed some odds and ends but still easily worth the money. It's an 89 Dodge Raider 2 door with the rare fuel injected V6 6G72 and a manual trans. This is what it looked like when we brought it home, mismatched wheels and all.

It has two rust spots on the very back underneath the taillights. That is not a common rusting place for these so I'm assuming maybe one of the previous owners used it to back their boat trailer in the water and some got trapped? Not sure. Anyway its a boxy truck so it'll be an easy fix to cut that out and replace it.

Image

Shortly after we got it I found some like new Nexen 31-10.50's on nissan pathfinder wheels. Sadly the center bore is quite a bit smaller even though the lug pattern is the same. I didn't want to bother with trying to enlarge the center bore so the hunt was on for new wheels.

After weeks of browsing craigslist and ebay I finally stumbled across some affordable wheels. They are made by Cragar and called none other than "Mirage" 8) . Once I saw the name I knew they were meant for me. Scored them on closeout for $79 each, shipped. They are 15 x 8's so they look a little meaner on there than the stockers.

I also picked up a tire cover from China on Ebay for around $20.

I got rid of the smaller home made front bumper and replaced it with an oem one. The donor also had a perfect grill so I grabbed it too. I like the Montero one a little more.

Next on the list was a radio. It had one of those $20 aftermarket units in it along with a broken trim piece and it was very poorly mounted using 1, yes 1 screw. We ordered a double din Kenwood and I fabbed up an aluminum mounting plate and covered it with 3M CF wrap. Looks better in person.

A few more exterior shots:

Next on the list is to change the fluids in the trans, x-fer case and both axles and fix some noisy lifters and replace a few leaking injectors. Other than that just drive it and enjoy it for now.

Its funny how one of the guys get one and we all follow! :) You know I dig it, and I'm jealous about the 5 speed!

I sometimes miss my old one. 2.6 with all the revised goodies besides efi. Still have a pair of superwinch hubs and the front wind deflector hoarded just in case I get another. I fit 33s on FJ 17" steelies without any lift. Of course the lack of articulation helped.
A side benefit of your V6 one is the coil rear suspension, not only does it ride smoother and travel more, it's a direct bolt in to upgrade to the stronger gen2 arms, gen 2 axle (beefier all around, and a locker in the SR), and better brakes.

Good score.

Oh and gen 2 coils will lift it, and gen 2 upper front arms will help with camber if you crank the torsions.

Man I miss mine...

Darkhorse, I actually have access to a few 94-95 Montero SR's at one of the local yards. Anything special on those that is a good upgrade? I would like to upgrade the rear end eventually just to get rear discs. Does it matter if the rear comes from an auto Montero since mine is manual?

Nate, we've wanted one for a while now but they are so rare. Well, we did have that white 87 a few months back but it was just too much of a project. Glad this one fell into our laps.

Nice score! I'm not a big SUV/truck guy at all, but these things are damn cool

That thing looks awesome!!! I have been eyeballing about for a small (smaller than this one) and rugged 4wd to hit the mountains with myself. You definitely found a keeper there if you considered family space.

You'll have to talk Nate into that. He can pull the engine from his truck  .

Yeah I have to get to finishing that truck swap. No one realizes how much is different between the car and truck engine (dohc and sohc)!

Yank the truck engine and install 4G63. Done!

Yeah, but more worth the effort than using a 6G72 ;)

Think that I'd want some low-end torque with that vehicle, count the 4g63 out. Even so, that looked like a complicated build on its own.

2.4L stroker with an auto and a small turbo would definitely make more torque than the V6, but I see what you're saying. I'd just leave it alone and enjoy it.
