I am having major problems getting the transmission to go into all gears. I can't get the transmission into 1st and reverse is kinda tough with my 4 speed cable lever. With the 5 speed cable lever all I have is second. What's wrong with this picture

Fyi. I'm swapping from a f4m21 to an f5m21

Can you manually hit all gears without the cables attached?

Yes, this is a known good trans pulled from my 94 Summit that was running/driving.

Here's what we know....The 4g shifter is a direct bolt in on a 3g mirage with a 3g trans. Plenty of people here have done it. He is using a 4g shifter as well. I recommended that he try a pair of 4g shifter cables but it would be nice if he didn't have to go through all that trouble.

Not all gears. Mind you this car isnt road worthy its on jack stands and needs a few things (brakes bled and new rotors and pads). I want to make sure it shifts like butter on the jack stands before I drive it

This is all true, I have a 3g hatch with a 4g shifter and a 4g (f5m21) trans but trying to use stock shift cables

Well I searched for about an hour or so through old posts and found that other people had also done this swap and had a similar problem. One guy actually just used the 5 speed bracket and had no problems, which is strange because everyone else had big problems with the 5 speed bracket.

The solution I read about is to simply use your old 4 speed shift cable bracket and space it out about 1/2 in or so. Im going to try and get longer bolts and washers or something that can space me out about 1/2in

I did also pull the 4g cables from the yard, im not sure if I should try them or not

I'd try the 4g cables since you already have them. 4g shifter, cables and trans, how can it not work?

I don't think its the length or shape of the cables, its how it aligns with the shift levers. I have shimmed it a little over a half inch and still having issues with 2nd and reverse. I will get more washers or possibly try to work with the 5 speed bracket because if alignment is key the 5 speed bracket is a bit different and is about an inch or more offset the way I need it but in stock mounting it was worthless.

I just know with this 4g shifter, 4g trans, 4 speed bracket and 3g cables all gears but 2nd and reverse feel like they shift amazing

When I swapped from a F5m31 (KM210) to the F5M33 (KM215), both FWD trans, my 3G shifter cables and 4G shifter base, required matching up the proper arm on the trans, swapping to an "L" arm combination, as the original F5M33 FWD DSM arms, were not providing proper alignment.

Also to note, I had to use the proper cable brackets on the trans also, I accidentally cleaned and painted and installed what was likely the FWD DSM brackets and couldn't shift, heck the shifter was sitting way back from where it should have.

So, back to your issue, I'm thinking that alignment to the bellhousing both in/out and back front for each cable, is 100% essential to get you into the gears with the proper shifter alignment and desired throw, and corresponding movement at the trans selector levers.

That would be solved like the washers stack, you showed us above.

May have to fine tune things a bit, but there has to be a combination that works 100% without any washer stacks, just parts to bolt in.
