No real progress lately, it's either been raining or just too hot to work on the car. We did get it up on jackstands and pulled the original brakes and suspension off. I have new KYB GR-2's made for a 1g AWD ready to go on. The front brakes will be upgraded to the twin piston calipers and a drum to disc conversion on the rear.

I actually had it promised to Frank (Possiblevr4). I was going to do an AWD swap on it for him. Once we sold our Outlander Sport though I decided to keep it and fix it for myself since it was in such good condition and we needed something to drive. You guys know me though, I don't keep anything long so we'll see what happens in the future.

Chris your builds ALWAYS come out so clean and tidy. I love your attention to detail. That 4G64 is going to be alot of fun in that car and I bet you'll see 30 MPG or more if you can keep your foot out of it. Lord knows I wouldn't be able to. I just started a new job a few months ago for the world's largest oil and natural gas well site service provider and I'm making alot more money than I did working anywhere else and once I get caught up on all of my debt and bills I want to build something sick, I just have no idea what yet. The Hyundai is falling apart. The good news is that another company within Schlumberger just hired me as a full time mechanic with a HUGE pay raise, free FULL benefits, a company phone, company laptop, company truck (2012 F250 Super Duty 6.7 PowerStroke twin turbo), matching 401k, employee stock options, all Matco tools, and much more. It's an opportunity that I just couldn't pass up. Anyway, I would really like to get rid of the rattler Hyundai and build something that'll definitely be turbo, a manual, and smoke most anything around (like a Colt...). Good to see that you're doing well Chris.

I'm glad to hear that things are looking up for you and your family Rob.

I got some work done to the rear of the car over the weekend. Here is a comparison of the 1g dsm awd rear struts vs the stockers.

Image

Armed with my angle grinder and cutoff wheel I made a few relief cuts into the stock struts to get the metal sleeve out.

Image

Once the rubber bushing was out I trimmed it with a table saw, then the bench grinder and finally a wire brush to get all of the rubber off and was left with this.

Image

It's a perfect fit in the awd dsm struts.

Image

Image

I decided to tack them with the welder to keep them from sliding around. All bolted up.

Image

Image

I used the stock upper strut mounting bracket and oem struts from a 1g awd dsm.

Rear hub blasted with new races pressed in and taped off for paint.

Image

Rear bracket blasted, painted and bolted up.

Image

Hub painted with new bearings packed and bolted on.

Image

I cleaned the rotor with brake cleaner and taped off the pad surface area and shot the rest with semi-gloss black to keep the rust off once the car is on the road.

Image

I have a good pair of used calipers waiting to be cleaned up and painted, then we can move to the front.

hey Chris on the caliper bracket pics.. those are factory ones right?.. do yours sit at the same angle? mine put the caliper at about 9 O'clock... where those look like its about 10:30 - 11 O'clock.. if your kit is suppose to end up the same as these then I think mine are on wrong lol..which might be why my brakes suck lol

looks great tho..cant wait till its running.

Yes, these are factory brackets. I was going to make a set for myself but miragesist hooked me up with the brackets and hubs. Mine are just copies of these so they will put the caliper at the same angle. Sounds like yours are on upside down.

Here is a 91-94 turbo TB I picked up from Natedog a while back.

Image

All torn down.

Image

Cleaned, painted and new shaft seals pressed in.

Image

Assembled and ready to bolt on.

Image

Image

Image

Image

I drilled out the vacuum line barbs and tapped them and blocked them with SS set screws.

Image

I pulled a transmission from a 95 Mirage coupe with 152k on it. Various engine oil leaks found their way onto it making it one of the filthiest transmissions I've ever seen.

Image

After soaking it several times with degreaser, scrubbing it with sos pads, brushes and whatever else we could find I blasted it off with a pressure washer.

Image

All mounts and brackets removed for blasting and paint.

Image

Even though it was clean the aluminum case still had a rough texture so I went at it with several wire brushes chucked up in my 1/2" drill and got in the crevices with a dremel. This alone probably took an hour or more.

Image

Once it was all smooth I gave it 3 coats of aluminum paint and bolted all of the freshly painted brackets and mounts on with some new hardware.

Image

If all goes well we should be dropping the engine and trans in this weekend. Then I'll tackle the wiring and pull the dash to swap out the auto shifter and pedals and dye the dash black while it's out.

Also since the 7 bolt 4G64 doesn't have mounting points for a front engine mount I'll modify the cross member to work with the mounts on the transmission case.

Rear calipers are on but I still need to hook up the e-brake cables and brake lines.

So much pretty in one post! Try oven cleaner next time, that stuff really gets the grime out and it's like $2/can at walmart.

Actually I did use a little on it getting the gunk out of the hard to reach places.

Do you ever have problems with paint chipping and scratching when you do all these parts? I'm assuming everything was done spray can, and I never seem to have good long-term results with that.

It holds up pretty good under the hood. But it is paint so it does scratch/chip of course. I do try to prep the part well to make sure it sticks good but again, its only paint. If you were to spray it down with carb cleaner or toss tools up on the valve cover while doing maintenance of course its going to come off or chip. If you're careful it'll stay looking nice for years.

Same way with the interior. I dyed some interior black several years ago on a mirage sedan and it looked great. If you kicked the door or took a nail and tried to scratch it, it would come off but I think you'd have that same problem on a new car.
