So I finally have my own build thread. After a quick trip up to Morongo Valley this morning I came home with a fantastic 89 Colt GT shell just begging to become a time trial beast. This was Chris's (rallyguy) project that he graciously donated to me. The cage work was done by Dave Turner.

It has been sitting in the desert for a few years and has some slight surface rust on some of the cagework and some other minor bodywork. For my purposes -- it's PERFECT!!!

There will be quite a few surprises with this build... but you'll just have to wait.

A couple of pics from the ride home:

I'm going to continue to update this thread as I go but I've reserved a couple of posts below this so that I can post pictures and descriptions of major accomplishments.

Just kidding. Now that you let slip where you work, this thing better be restored back to its former glory. Look forward to progress!

Do you truly plan to make it a dedicated time attack vehicle? Are you wanting FWD or AWD? I have some really crazy ideas for a FWD Colt for the time attack scene. That shell would be the best starting point.

It will absolutely be a dedicated Time Attack vehicle, AWD of course. It may make some rallycross appearances too, but those events are few and far between right now until the sport really takes off.

I shall keep my insane ideas for a FWD time attack Colt to myself then...

Make it basically tube chassis with only the outermost body panels still intact. Then fabricate a custom tubular suspension and bracing. Shoot for a 2200lb AWD car. Chya!

I can't do a tube chassis. The series I am building this for does not allow for any severe alterations of the unibody.

Can you make under-braces for the chassis?

There aren't any exact rules against it for either class I'll be competing in.

I'm building it for Redline Modified Class. I'm trying to get a waiver to participate in PTCC Tuner Over class too but the rules are a bit murky for this car. It says that you can swap and change drive configuration but then it says that if the car comes with a solid rear axle that it cannot be converted to independent suspension. I'm pushing for the waiver under the premise that the car was offered AWD in Europe, Japan and Down Under. Especially since they allow genuine right hand cars compete as if they were USDM offerings. I had lunch with Dave Coleman a couple of months ago to talk about it. I just have to follow up when it is sitting on all fours in its new trim.

It is awesome that you are taking the correct steps and really going for a TA build with this car.

How was it lunching with Coleman? I would absolutely enjoy a chance to do just that.

I decided a long time ago that having a ridiculous street car is just that, ridiculous. Especially in Southern California it is just begging for trouble. Building a car for the track is the only way to do it right in my opinion.

Dave is a cool guy, but when it comes down to it he's just another guy like the rest of us. We touched on my project but we mostly were talking about his MiataBusa project and all of the upcoming LeMons races this year.

Also - updated the third post with a new milestone date
