I'm just going to copy and paste my ongoing project log from my local forum. I'll continue to update them as time goes on.

November 14, 2009

Thanks to a lead from a member on my local forum I went and picked this beauty up for my next project.

I am the 3rd owner of this Colt, The original purchaser is a nice old man named Gilbert, Who owned this car for the first 18 years of its life here in michigan, then sold it to his neighbor who sold it to me.

My goals

* 400+whp
* sub 11.5 second passes this summer
* e85 conversion
* remove tint from side windows as soon as the weather breaks lol.

On to the pictures!

On to the interior, which is actually pretty clean aside from the tear in the seat

As of now she has been away in storage over at a friends house due to my lack of storage facility. Thanks for the space Bobby!

November 25th, 2009

Picked up a nice set of Brian Crower 272/272 Camshafts from a local friend.

December 5th, 2009

Picked up a very very low, mint condition authentic Evo 3 16g from a local member

I got Ecmlink v3 straight from Ecmtuning!
Image

I haven't done much work to the car as it's not a priority right now, And Bobby and I don't like the cold . But I'll get a few more pictures every couple days as I'm working on it .

Yesterday Bob and I did a compression test, the motor was cold But I did hold the throttle wide open, I didn't bother warming it up or letting it idle. The compression test went as follows

4 3 2 1
154-154-154-148

Today I finished pulling the blown 11b, there is about 1/4" of in and out shaft play and there was a pretty good amount of oil sitting inside the exhaust housing.

Here's a few shots of how the engine bay sits right now.
Image
Image

Also I took some comparison pictures, These are side by side photos of the 11b on the left vs. the evo 3 16g on the right., Note: the 11b still has an o2 housing attached so it sits higher.
Image
Image
Image

Here are also a pictures of the Colt exhaust manifold vs the 1g dsm exhaust manifold
Image

My next plan is to remove the head and install these in my semi built head.....
Image
Image

And the set of 272's with some 3g lifters ect ect. More pictures as soon as I make more progress .

Today I pulled the ecu out of the car, I heard a rumor that the majority of the 89 GT's had EPROM's from the factory so I checked just to make sure. Low and behold .....

This is about all the time I had to get done today. I also recieved my Tial 38mm Vband flange so John @ REVSHIFT can get working on my exhaust manifold... Pictures of the flange and what not later on .

Okay so today my Main goal was to start working on clearing the engine bay out, I removed unnecessary bull that wasn't going to be used anymore. I don't have much to say about that so let's get to the pictures!

Here's a before for reference..
Image

And here are a few from after.
Image
Image
Image
Image

Here is the pile of shit removed thus far.
Image

I removed the wiper motor for a few reasons, I want to remove the whole wiper assembly for better aero, And ontop of that, a little weight reduction. I don't plan to drive the car in questionable climates so no worries there.

I was going to have a plate made to cover the hole that was now there, Instead for now I'm just going to use the exisiting plate minus the wiper motor, I bought some alan head bolts and washers to use. I mocked it up today but I plan to paint the washers and "plate" in the future as well as find a plug for the hole where the motor attached to rod.
Image

I realized after this picture that the washers aren't needed and the allen heads hold the plate snug without the washers, so those are gone now.

Okay, I got a little done here today. I removed the rest of the EVAP/Emissions shit, Along with some A/C baggage that no longer needed to be around. Here's a few pictures of that business...
Image
Image
Image

After that shinannaginns I unhooked the harness that tied into the electrical components on the head, and then later removed the head finally.

That is all for now. I'm unsure what head I am going to be using, be it the 1.6 or the 2.0, I need to figure that out so I can start assembling it. I'm sleepy I'll add more to this update when I get a chance.

I forgot to add this picture too...

Today I finally made some time to go work on the colt again. It was cold and I didn't get a lot accomplished but It was progress none the less.

I stripped the head of cams / lifters / rockers / fuel rail / intake manifold. I noticed the intake ports were much much smaller than those of a 1g head and actually very similar to ports on a 2g head. I don't have a 2g head for comparison but here's the 1g 2.0l DSM head vs Colt GT 1.6l head comparison.

Colt on the left, DSM on the right.

Colt on top, DSM on bottom in this picture.

On to intake manifolds, Colt on the bottom, DSM on the top

And Colt on the left, DSM on the right again.

I'll update this more after dinner! Enjoy for now

Not much of an update, Today I finally went out to oako's automotive and Bart hooked me up with a great price on the new TiAL mvs 38mm V-band wastegate.

For size comparison...

I plan to run the 1.0 bar spring combo to tune the car, then I'll swap over to the 1.4 bar spring combo when I'm ready to have some real fun. With the 1.4 bar and a boost controller I should be able to peak just north of 40 psi. This wont be the case on the evo 3 turbo, but when I upgrade it will come in handy

That's all for today, more to come as always!

EDIT: Also, I got an email back from Thomas at ECMtuning today, My eprom is ready to be socketed and he will be shipping it back 3/2 or 3/3 I can't waittttttttt.

So yesterday I went and power washed my cylinder head, I think it came out really well. I used to work at a car wash in Eastpointe So I went there and used a special chemical they use on the automatic wash. It didn't get everything but it looks x1000 better than before. Here's the pictures on that..

Today I went out and met up with a local friend and borrowed his valve spring compressor so Bobby and I can finish the head work and get the longblock back together.

Bobby pulled all the valves and lapped them up, I'll get more pictures of that tomorrow, but he's a few more pictures for the night.

Here is a comparison picture of the stock 1.6 springs vs. brian crower springs and titanium retainers. stock on the left, Crower on the right.

Thanks for looking, more tomorrow!

Okay, So the past few days, Bobby has been working on lapping the valves, replacing the valve stem seals, and installing the new Brian Crower springs and retainers!. I worked on stripping the rest of the A/C stuff from the engine bay, and soaking all the rusty brackets and bolts with PB Blaster.

John "Revshift" has been fabricating me a custom manifold and downpipe which are almost done, as the head is ready to be put on the car whenever I get around to scraping gasket adhesive from the block/head.

Here are some of the pictures from the cylinder head work by Bobby.

This is about all I have for now, next up is priming the 3g lifters, installing those, and the Brian Crower 272's!

Thanks for looking.

Well I realized I can't afford the injectors, 2 fuel pumps, and FPR kit right at this moment. But I want to get a good start on the car. Today I'm ordering PTE 880cc injectors, and Monday I will be ordering the timing components. I will still pick up some 1450's in a few weeks but it doesn't hurt to have extra injectors laying around anyways.

I got my lifters all primed up and installed them, As well as the camshafts finally.
Image
Image
Image

Then I started to work on getting the block ready to put the head back on, here is a picture where I sanded the deck surface from 600-800-2000 on half, and left the other half for comparison.
Image

I still need to go over the whole deck surface but I finally got the water pump, motor mount bracket, and water pipe out of the way, The only things still in my path are the locating dowels.

I have mentioned John @ REVSHIFT is making me a tubular manifold,
Well here is a teaser .......
Image

I believe I might be working on the car a bit more this afternoon, not sure yet, maybe tomorrow. Hopefully it goes smooth from here on out.

Small update here, the teaser I posted of the collector, that idea has been trashed. We decided against using the 16 gauge steel, and went with schedule 10 instead. A teaser of the new design will be posted sometime tonight. It's fruit and banana great if you ask me! Here's the collector for now...

Alright, Here's an update that will contain a good amount of pictures.

This past week I've been spending time helping John over at REVSHIFT develop my exhaust manifold, I previously posted teaser pictures. While I was over there I had him mill the wastegate actuator arm off my exhaust housing because I hated the way it looked and I'm running an external gate. I don't have a before picture but I'm sure you get the idea.
Image

Up next is a little progress on the manifold over at REVSHIFT..

Also I forgot to post up last week, I finally got my Eprom back from ECMlink. They did an excellent job on the socket service.

I want to say one thing, Speaking of ECMlink, Thomas Dorris has been nothing but helpful, from answering my emails at 3am, to dealing with bullshit ups losing my package, I would not, and will never hesitate to do business with ECMlink. Anybody on the fence, or considering buying Dsmlink, DO IT. Go V3, Not V3 lite IMHO.

Just wanted to get that out of the way. As always there is more to come. This god damn car might actually run this coming weekend.

March 16th, 2010 Part 2

Today was a business day, no pictures on this day!
I cleaned up my fuel rail and sprayed a few base coats of high temp gloss black on that. I'll hopefully finish that up tomorrow.

I also reinstalled my ECU containing DSMlink V3, And I ran the usb cable from the OBD port, to the center console for easy access when I need to plug it into my netbook.

I was rummaging through my storage bins and found a 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse weighted shift knob, So I installed that on the car instead of the worn down factory shift knob.

I sanded the block down smoothly and got that ready to slap the head on tomorrow. I went from 600-800 to 2000 grit in stages.

I also scrapped the residue from the waterpump gasket, Tomorrow I'm going to pick up a new waterpump and install that bad boy along with the water pipe, and possibly a few other things. I may install the head tomorrow if the waterpump doesn't give me too many issues, which I don't think it will.

That's all for this day, More tomorrow as the car is getting closer to starting again .

Today was another all business, no pictures day. Sorry guys.

Anyways, I made it over to Bobby's house about 2:30, I used the metal brush to get all the oil and loose crud off some things I wanted to paint.

I put the fuel rail and cam angle sensor on the head, I put the throttle body, coil pack, and PTU on the intake manifold.

My timing tensioner, idler pulley, and tensioner pulley will be here tomorrow so I can install those.

I also went and exchanged my old waterpump for a new one today. So I will install that tomorrow as well.

If tomorrow goes as planned I can install the head finally as well. I might go pick up a timing belt tomorrow if possible. At the very least I want the head bolted down.

The only things holding me back from starting the car
-injectors(will be here saturday)
-exhaust manifold(I will put hot coals under Johns feet friday so he can works faster )
-o2 sensor(I can start the car in open loop until I get one)

Things I want to buy as soon as possible
-intercooler piping for my FMIC
-TiAL 50mm BOV in black
-FIC BlueMax 1450cc injectors
-Bosch 044 fuel pump
-Fuel Lab Fuel pressure regulator kit

I can probably have all of this acquired by the end of april. Then it's time to hit the dyno

I'll update tomorrow with some pictures to make up for yesterday and today

Here's a few more from the other day.
