in the relatively-lightweight mk1 vw world, the OCD ones build a "tiptissorie", flip it on one side, work on it, put it down and reverse them, then flip it on the other side.

I got a little more done on the colt today. My brother brought over his Hobart plasma cutter and let me borrow it to cut the spare tire area out. This thing was a life saver for sure, no sparks flying everywhere like there would be with a cutoff wheel. Now I just have a few more spot welds to drill out to clean up the frame rails a little.

First I laid underneath the car and drilled holes every 6 inches or so out-lining what I wanted to cut out. This allowed me to just connect the dots in the hatch with a sharpie so that I would have something to go by when dragging the torch.

Looks awesome Chris, I've always wanted to try using a plasma cutter. What with the recent work it seems like you're finally past the point of no return :lol:

Lookin good, plasma makes for a nice even cut. I've been tryn to get a hold of plasma to cut into mine at the moment. Have you figured out what your goin to use to cover it back up? I really like Coltsfan swap where he replaced the rear pan with the 1g stuff, it made for a suttle and stock look and is what I'm goin to try and duplicate.

Yeah, no turning back now. :P

This particular plasma cutter sells for about $750 new at Tractor Supply. It runs on 110 household current and has a tiny onboard air compressor so no need for a separate one. 1/8" is about the max that it will cut but its still very useful for projects like this. It does cut a very straight line if you can pull the torch straight, as you can see I didn't do that. I could have clamped down something to guide it but I figured I'd just even it out with a flap disc on my grinder later.

I have no idea what I'm going to cover it with once I'm done. I agree, Dayo did a nice job of making his look like it came that way. I need to decide if I'm going with some type of regular tank or flat fuel cell underneath. That will determine what I do about the trunk pan. It would be nice to have somewhere for a spare tire.

I also finished removing the rear of the floor pan down where the tow hook was. I forgot to grab a pic but here are all of the misc pieces that came out today.

While laying on my back drilling spot welds I saw something that I didn't like. Looks like my colt is finally getting the rust on the roof from the glue they used to hold it to the braces. So now I get to remove those and clean it all up to keep it from getting any worse. :-?

I dug most of the parts for my awd rear subframe out of the barn and put it all together. I will be tearing it all back down and blasting/painting each part once I fab up the mounts. The 16X8 3000GT wheels barely clear and it doesn't look like they're going to stick out too far. I think it will look mean once its all together and lowered with some short 16" tires, 225/40's maybe.

I finally got my engine hoist over here so that should make it a lot easier to raise and lower the rear subframe. Looks like I can just raise the hatch and lift it through there but we'll see.

It's a good thing you got the rust free fuel pump assembly out of there, it just would have been in your way the whole time. 8)

Hahahaha, minutes after that I was down to only two. A few were not in there straight so the rotor wouldn't go on there. I wanted to slap the wheel on so I knocked them out with the hammer. :lol:
