yeah i always hammer off some old CSM/DSM outter joints and put them back into the hubs if i am moving the car around with no axles in it...

It looks as if the outter bearing race came off with that hub... I would personally get a new bearing for her and your going to have to cut that race off the hub to put it all back together.. also press the old bearing out of the knuckle then put it all back together again. You got it apart, and if the bearing came apart like that it probably was on its way out anyways..

Come on man, give me more credit than that  . Like I mentioned earlier these are just some junkyard hubs that I tossed on there just to move it. I was going with a 4x100 setup until I scored the AWD parts so I sold those to someone else. Before it ever hits the road under its own power it will have all new bearings and seals in both the front and the rear.

Glad to see you moving it into the build location. I was worried you might beat me on our swaps but I hope to be done by the end of May. I haven't updated my thread much because it seems as if it wasn't being watched. Looking forward to updates.
Not a chance Harvey, yours will be running long before mine I'm sure. I can't speak for everyone but I periodically check all of the builds on here for updates. It gives me inspiration to work on my pile.

As long as the weather is decent on Saturday I'll be going for sure.

They are 1g dsm fwd rear hubs. I was able to bolt them on just to move the car. The bearings are larger than csm bearings so they are loose on the stubs axle.

I made a little more progress today. I got the hub back on and stuck an old axle in there. We then pushed the car and got it somewhat straight and then it went up on jackstands where it will be for a while I'm sure. I love rust free cars. I had the gas tank and the rear end out in 30 minutes using handtools and my cordless Makita impact. As you can see in the pics it still needs to be pressure washed. I figured I would drop the rear end first and then pressure wash under the car too while I'm at it.

I am venturing down the gas tank removal tomorrow, wish me luck. I will let you know how long a Wisconsin car takes :)

Worked on the colt a little today since the weather was perfect. Probably spent two or three hours on it although it doesn't look like it. I broke out the drill and the spot weld cutter and went to work removing the fwd rear axle mounts. I even stole two old pillows from the couch because my neck was cramping up  .

I started off by chucking up a wire brush in my drill and removing dirt, paint and undercoating from the spot welds. I then took a sharpie and put a dot in the center, used my center punch and hammer to put a dimple there and then I used a tiny drill bit to give the spot weld cutter something to ride on. I know I could have just whacked these off even with the frame rails but I want to make this car look like it came AWD from the factory as much as possible.

I still need to trim the piece with the nut welded to it but my jack stand was in the way so I just moved to the front gas tank studs and I will come back to this.

Image

In order to trim these I first needed to get the fuel and brake lines out of the way. I have parts scattered all over from this car so what's a few more, right?

After all my hard work this is what I cut out so far.

With all this cutting, grinding, hammering and drilling I start to gather up my tools as its getting dark and I look up and see this standing about 150 feet away in an empty field behind my house. She offered zero help.

Nice work Chris. I would do the same thing if I were to convert a CSM. It is unfortunate in some ways that we do not live near each other. Think of the damage we could do if we were able to help each other.

Thanks Harvey! I know what you mean man, we'd be cutting cars in half and welding them back together or something  . Both of our cars would have been done a year ago and we'd be on completely different projects by now.

Very clean work. Is the under-side going to be clean enough to eat off? :D

Thanks man! Yes, it will be when I'm done but I'm not sure how long it will stay like that.
