I was thinking that actually. Either that or try to convince a buddy of mine with a graphics business to wrap my car in vinyl. He hates doing it, but I'm doing some custom tuning on his 86 Omni GLHS, so we might be able to trade ;).

Tonight, the rocker gets finished, the hood gets put back on, and the car comes off the jackstands. I'm bored at work, so I decided to post a pointless update  .

Maybe I'll roll it out and take some pictures, although it's usually pitch black by the time I get home now :(.

Hood's on, the car is on the ground, some of the worst greasy handprints have been removed, my workbench is loaded with DSM parts...and the next time I can touch it is spring :(. My garage isn't insulated, nor is there a ceiling, so it's impossible to heat it.

I ordered a lower-end gasket kit (felpro) from rockauto.com, so I may be able to at least re-assemble the engine before the snow falls...but it'll be too cold to install it, unless I can find a local yeti to lend a hand, lol.

Today's pics:
This workbench used to be full of VW parts.

All welding done, ready for the engine...which could be a while :(.

I'm sure we can source a local body to help out. {drags toe in the sand}

I've got some heaters at my disposal and some warm clothes. It's not that bad, especially because you aren't installing urethane mounts at this point. I have a load leveler I lent out two weeks ago that will be coming back shortly and will work wonders to install the trans and engine in one shot. I'm sure we can work a plan where the big stuff gets in then you can work around the small stuff minus the wiring at 40 below. Haha.

Almost forgot, are you rebuilding the motor internals so it would need to stay out from the frame?

I've got a wicked forced-air propane heater, but the big issue is the lack of ceiling. Every BTU of heat disappears right out the soffet vents, and the roof vents :(. I may try to work on it over the cold months, but motivation is also tough to find at those temps, lol.

I'm only re-gasketing the engine, it had great compression so I'll leave the big rebuild for another year. I've ordered the gasket kit I need for the bottom end, but a decent timing belt kit is too $$ to get before the new year. Got a trip to Florida in Jan, so all my spare money has to go towards that.

If I manage to get some spare funds together (anyone need a MAFTranslator? lol), I may try to get it all done...but I may have to sleep in the car for a while ;).

Started ghetto fabbing a new bumper-to-fender mount, since the one on the driver's side (of course, like all the other rot) is no good. JB Weld is my friend :).

It was kinda nice to jack the front of the car up from the driver's side, and be able to lift the rear wheel too. It used to just flex like a piece of licorice, lol.

I did a bit of playing around with the 4G61T hex code and blended it with the 1G DSM stuff so I could use all their cool mods. I've now got a Colt GT file with the CEL shift light, phantom knock code, FPS output based on RPM, stutterbox, etc. It's all adjustable too :). I love how open the DSM hex is, definitely cool stuff. I'm not sure if I'll run the stock MAF yet, but I'm only running a 13G from a 1G auto, so it might work fine.

There are days it pays to have a friend who is the world's biggest DSM packrat :). Got a used oil pan and a 1G-to-2G MAF adapter for free :). Well, technically they were an early christmas present, lol.

I've already pounded out the dent in the pan and put a coat of paint on it. Hopefully the engine will be mostly assembled by the end of the weekend :D.

Sounds like you are making good progress! Keep the motivation up. Since this has basically turned into a build thread would you like for me to move it to the builds section for you?

Cool, thank you sir.

Nothing major to report right now, but I am expecting my gasket kit tomorrow, so I might be able to get the bottom end 'done' by sunday. I'll still need headbolts and a timing belt kit, but it's getting there!

[edit]Uh, just got a FULL timing belt kit (and new oil cap) from bestpricecarparts.ca for $86, with free shipping. The hyundai stuff is way cheaper than actual 61T or 63T stuff it seems. I like this :) [/edit]

Lower gasket kit is in! I know what I'm doing on saturday...especially since the wife is off doing stuff all day.

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! The bottom end should be done, and I'll probably have made good progress on the head (redoing the valve stem seals while it's easy). Once the timing belt kit comes in, then I'll only need a clutch kit (PO let the clutch go too long and the rivets grooved up the PP pretty badly :(. Bully Clutch is local to me, and has a great relationship with the shop I work at, so I may just go with one of their stage 2 kits, since this is going to be a summer daily for me...and I get stuck in traffic a LOT. My clutch knee is starting to ache as I get older, so anything firmer is a no-go.

Besides, if I go big power, I'll be converting to auto ;).

Ok, so perhaps the bottom end won't be done, but I've made progress anyway. Everything involved in the reassembly (oil pump, front cover, oil filter housing, etc) is clean and ready to go. New gaskets in the front cover as well. The head is partially stripped so that I can do the valve stem seals tomorrow, and I'll probably spend a few hours de-crudding it too.

No better time to do preventative maintenance :).

Got half the valve stem seals replaced. It's waaaaaaaaay easier than the engines I'm used to working on (VW 8v and 16v), which is nice. Made a little tool out of a shitty pair of needlenose pliers and a washer (cut in half) to get the seals off, and it works great. Should be able to finish up tonight, then I have to de-gunk everything. This engine was FILTHY. Bleck.
