Post subject:  Q. on EVO3 vs 16G

I haven't had time to research, so I am starting here. My turbo may be shot, two days before NOPI in Richmond, Va. :( I can't make any boost. turbo spins free to the hand. My guru says put in an EVO3. I now have a small 16G, ported, not clipped. It also has a larger flapper valve, and the housing has been ported and insulating covered. I'm really not looking for more than 300hp, and the caris used for street most of the time. Question:What is difference in EVO3 and 16G? Preferences?

EVO3 turbo? You did not specify, but I ASSUME thats what your talking about. The controversey between what comes on a EVO3 and what does not. Majority of the time an EVO3 motor had a Big 16G, better known as a Super16G here in the States. a small 16G pushes 505cfms at 15 psi of boost. A Big 16G from EVO3 pushes 550cfms at 15 psi of boost.
Personally go with what you got which is the small 16G it will do what you want it to do which is support 300HP. Just understand you need the supporting parts to get the 300HP out of the motor.
Take it easy!

there is a difference between evo 3 16g and a regular b16g, the evo 3 has a much lighter weight turbine housing, and a 2.5" outlet into the o2 housing. it also has a lighter/strong turbine wheel, and a ever so slightly larger compressor wheel, and is also slightly larger inducer area.

with 2.5inch exhaust and a dsm smic, with the afc leaned out lsightly in the lower rpm ranges, i was able to get it(evo 3) to hit full boost by 2,800-3,000 rpm in 5th on the high way.

it is slightly more expensive, but worth it.

:) BUMP Well, we did get the boost to work. The turbo J pipe outlet gasket is a must. Also, corrected other connections and got better clamps. Anyway, boost is on, but I am going to go with the evo 3(install tomorrow). Also, still need to plug isn some #s. Time is short. Boost comes on late. Not much in 1st; shift @6000, boost comes in , and it lifts and swishes! I hope to get some small #s Sat.

If your not seeing boost until 6000rpms man you got some exhaust issues. Either your running a really small exhaust, like stock or your cats clogged. Go read the turbo reviews under Parts reviews. You will see where alot of guys are hitting below 4000rpms full boost.

oppps also over looked the fact you might be running 1.8L/2.0L cylinder head, 2.0 intake, etc... my bag, even then I cannot imagine the boost coming in that late.

:D :-? Well, got to the track with my small 16G. This was my 2nd effort. My spool, or boost delay, is still bad. My launch is awful, car ran great on 16lbs, got 1 redlight, went 102 on each run, spotted my opposite number a head start but finished ahead each time with redlight, 14:464, and 14:344 (they closed down earlier than advertised and I did not stay for the next day), "driving to the track=fun; driving home from the track=priceless.
In answer to some advice, my exhaust is 3" through from header and new. I have been advised to remove the spring on the Ebrake; move to stage(still a problem); yank the Ebrake; rev that thing and slightly slip the clutch, then launch by releasing the Ebrake. Cool, got to test. Thanks to all. Oh, ran into Summitman; he was going to post some pics. Dnk where.

Bill, are you still using the 4G61? With your 16G I'm assuming you're using the 7cm housing?

No, I made the switch. I have the small 16G, ported but not clipped. I believe it is the 6cm housing. The o2 housing is also ported with a larger waste gate flapper. Third gear is a blast. I just think it is technique that it producing poor starts. But still, it just doesn't come on till 4,500-5,000 :(

Clipped exhaust wheel, yeah thats one part of the equation thats most likely why its coming on so late. So if you have a 2.0L I still cannot see why your 16G is hitting that late, 5000rpms. Technique will not make the turbo spool faster.

Why not just list everything that is installed on the car to date. Thanks will make it much easier to help.

made 102 on all three runs. Mods: 4G63T motor, no internals; Pacesetter equal length turbo header(insulate coating by Swaintech); ported o2 housing(ins. coat); 3" downpipe; 3" exh. tubing; Hi flow cat.; Thermal Research muffler; 4" tip; Walbro 255 fuel pump; Buscher FPR; OEM fuel rail; 550 injectors;1gen T/B(60mm);OEM manifold w/ 60mm opening; 2gen T/B elbow; 60mm tubing to FMIC(24"x8.75"x3.5")(custom,i.e.,home made, to bring charge in through lower half, turn back, exit top half) 2.5" openings; hi-flow air filter, 60 mm tubing; no MAF; small G16 turbo(ported, not clipped)w/integral waste gate; Turbonetics atmos. blow off valve; SDS stand alone engine mgmt., With SDS coil packs, 8.5mm spark wires. Cool not clipped. Well I have no idea then why your taking that long to spool up.
If your using AEM stand alone then sounds like its time to go back to the dyno and re-tune the car. Most likely your timing is off to the point its causing the motor to respond slow.

With all that you have on the car you should be in the 12s easily.

As I said in the PM, I agree. Still, my driving is poor, launches are terrible. That can be worked. I am not sure if my exhaust is retarded 5o. Would that help? You think, maybe?
