| Post subject: | Galannt VR4 Tranny into AWD Mirage |
I'm from Australia and have limited information on my car because it was imported from japan because they never sold them localy. I own a AWD Mirage Turbo Sedan and want to do th 4G63t swap. In Australia we don't have the Eclipes so I'm planing to get the engine from a Galant VR4. I want to swap the tranny (gearbox) from the VR4 as well, does anyone know if this will fit? Will I have any problems if the final drive ratio is different? Any other information on the swap would be great. I know there are other 4G63t swap info on the site but its not very specific. I have never done an egine coversion before. |

Check the transmission model codes on the side of your AWD 4G61T trans as more than likely it is the same as the GVR4. The 4G63T will bolt straight in no problems although you will need to either get a GVR4 ECU or some type of AFC to correct your fuel mixtures to suit the new engine. You may get lucky and the ECUs are pin compatible although that would need to be checked first. |

Engine, tranny and ecu will work out of the Galant. The tranny is actually better that the Eclipes as it has a taller first gear. |

I'm worried that the if the final drive is different then I may get the frond wheels turning at a different rate to the rear wheels. Is this likely to happen or do I not have a clue what I'm talking about? |

Yep, sorry my bad forgot. You'll have to use the transfer case and rearend gears/whole rearend along with the Galant tranny. |

The trouble with finding the info from a dealer is they don't know a thing about AWD Mirage/colts because they never were released in Australia. Mine was privately imported from Japan. |

I'm interested in this too (im in the same shoes). Need to use the Vr4 cv''s too???. I'm not to sure about the strenght of the 1600 gearbox with the AWD drive train. I have been told they hold alright, but with a H/d clutch im not to sure how long they would last with a bit of a beating. Better be safe than broken, |

As for the gear ratio, you should just be able to look at the back side of the pumpkin; there should be a sticker on there telling you what the gearing is, for example, on USDM Galant Vr4s and TELs, the ratio for a 5spd is 3.545. Autos had 3.331. I don't know what the ratios for the JDM Galants were, though. Hope this helps. |
