Post subject:  Need a definitive answer here... swapping the tranny...

I have done searches but I cannot find a difinitive answer from someone who has actually swapped their M/C turbo tranny for a DSM FWD tranny (sorry, I dont know the tranny codes). All the answers I have read so far reference a "friend" or "some guy I met once", and what they did... You know what I am talking about.

Does anyone have first hand knowledge of this swap, and what I will need, and what it will entail?

Thanks

Also, I dont know for sure, but it might be a good thing to add to the FAQ...

I'm running a dsm tranny. Don't remember what year it came from.

The only thing I had to change was the shift levers going into the transmission. It's a pain to swap though.

I got a 1G FWD trans & I was thinking of drilling it out, slide hammering the arm off, tapping the lever for a machine screw, drilling the tranny lever stud hole out a little bit bigger then putting the screw in with some threadlock.

The levers.

I second that!

The pin is a Bi@tch to drill out - I tried many times and failed - I ended up just using an angle grinder to get it off.

i just finished the wap last night,
need a drill bit and a punch and hammer to get the pin out of the linkage, you will need both pieces of linkage,
all i did was tap the shaft/linkage with a 6x1.0 metric tap and blue locktite the screw in. no problems.
drill about half of the pin out, and it will move out readily with the punch/hammer combo.
not even any need to slidehammer the linkage off.
if you soak it in penetrating oil, it will slide right off.

if you haven't swapped yet, DO IT! the '63t feels so much faster and stronger than with the km210.

also, the 4g15 4 speed stick shoft cars have the same trans linkage as the km210, so if any linkage is needed, there is a plentiful source there.

if any more questions, i will be happy to answer

this news is gold! do you think the same goes for the 4G15 5-speed cars for the linkage? only problem is how to remove the linkage at the boneyard on the car, without having to drop tranny, buy, then take home to remove it. :-? hackswa maybe!?!

Thanks Crackerman!

also, the 2.0 trans will lower your cruise rpm by about 8-900 rpm, 3-4 shift now happens at 110 mph, instead of 85, and the car feels much much faster, due to the fact that each gear doesn't wrap out really fast

I also forgot to mention, if you are getting very frustrated and pissed off, DO NOT, DO NOT keep wailing on that tranny with a hammer. it will only break it,
take a break, have a beer, this is not a good time to break something that necessary to drive the car every day....and the beer makes the job go faster and smother
