I know colt mania had an article on making your own gauge faces but unfortunatley using babelfish looses a bit in the translation does anyone know how to make them or a place to buy them for a C50 class. I would like to have gauge faces like the A4 Jettas (Blue on black when lit at night) and white on black during the day. Any input would be great... Tim |

I believe doing something like this would give u plenty of headaches since u have to be extremely careful with the delicate gauges and needles. From my experice, taking off the plastic cover to reveal my gauges caused it to crack ( not good) I just took off the trim aroung the gauges and painted that white ......so instead of having white gauge faces i have white around the black gauges...........loooks really good to tell you the truth......brings out that round gauge cluster look. |

I did that two years ago: - i removed the gauges assy and carefully removed the glass and the black backgroud to have access to the gauges faces. - carefully pull on the needle to remove it be sure to pull it in a perpendicular way. - remove the two littles screws that secure the gauges faces - i scanned all the gauges on my computer and i potoshoped the color i wanted and i even wrote ColtMax on the speedo. - print this picture at 1 by 1 scale on thin(for maximum brightness at night) glossy paper whith a good ink jet printer - fix with sprayable glue on your gauges. make sure that all the numbers and lines align one on the other so at night you can see some light comming through the old gauges configuration. tip: use white as background color and light colors for the lines and number so light can go trought them. you may also want to remove the green rubber from the gauges bulbs. i will try to find my scannes and my modified pictures ColtMax |

I would like to just change the green lighting to red. Not having opened anything up yet, are there simply colored pieces that slip over the bulbs, or is the green tinted into the plastic housing of the dash face? And on the note of getting at the dash light bulbs, anyone have any comments on how to get to the light for the right side of the heater/ventilation controls? I know the positions by feel, but it would be nice to have it lit up again. Zyzzyx -loving his car every day |

You have to take the whole assembly about 2inches out by tilting the backend up and kinda twisting it out, Ive done it a few times and recommend holding the gear for the temp control on cuz when it comes off it's hard to get in there to put it back in on the right tooth. All the bulbs just have like little greeen condoms on them, I've never been able to find the right bulb without going through satan and they want 10$ a bulb. I was thinking about cutting up ballons or something to place over the bulb to change the color, haven't tried it yet though |

[/quote:1xh58eoo] For the gauges Canadian tire (in canada) sells red bulbs that will fit the bigger ones for the smaller i havent found anything yet. there might be other store in the us that sells these. just swap the bulbs and it gives different color, but you have to know that the gauges are tinted green al ready so by putting red bulbs it wont be realy red. |

the gauge face plastics have the green, white, & red (on the redline) painted on them. the little rubber covers & bulbs can be swiped from any M/C DSM/Galant at the junkyard. what I'm planning on doing is having the gauges scanned by a vinyl sign shop & putting the vinyl sticker on a clear lexan film, cutting them to shape & lighten them up by LED or a mini neon tube. I want it to look like this when I'm done: <IMG SRC="./uploads/gauge led.jpg"> |

Zyzzyx: Its not as simple as pulling of the green rubber condoms on your bulbs (already got blue bulbs from my Canadian Tire) the plastic that the gauge is printed on is green so the only way to change it is to scan and print. I might go to get a colour laser photocopy done at staples of my gauge face that way they can do the colour changes and then when it prints the colour is more uniform. Just a suggestion for everyone... <font size=-1>[ This Message was edited by: Berserko on 2002-03-07 12:46 ]</font> <font size=-1>[ This Message was edited by: Berserko on 2002-03-07 12:47 ]</font> |

Hrrmph... Guess I'll just leave it and deal with it then. Besides, I'd still have the green LED dash clock and my green display stereo to deal with. Zyzzyx -currently bummed from losing DSL |

Zyzzyx: Well you can get see through plastic stuff dunno what its called (like the stuff they have in cheap 3d glasses the give away in cereal boxes. You can tape it over the inside display of the clock (it opens up nice and easy) and then your display is blue or green or whatever you tint it as. My radio has blue display already to match the rest of the car. If anyone wants to see my install of an Empeg in dash MP3 player powered by linux check out the install section of: http://empeg.comms.net Listed as 1992 Dogde Colt(Mitsubishi Mirage) Install Success it's pretty sweet. |

No it won't because you would have to re-calibrate your spedometer probably if you got the speedo cable from a Lancer (or even just the gear off the end of it) that would probably work then. |
