okay this is ridiculous
you guys have treated me like i know what im doing, i apparently am ignorant as it gets
the rear balance shaft spins on a 3 to 1 ratio?
i had NO IDEA
all these years i must have been lucky, i thought just line up marks, no big deal.

how could i have missed this for so long...

you were saying stick a bolt in to verify, yes i got that.
ive even eliminated them before.
i just was like, why would they be out, like the keyway is broken or something?
Like, ive done so many of these ive lost count.
i doubt ive ever read instructions on it, its a timing belt

when u do a timing belt on a 63.. you line up all the marks.. put the belt on and get everything snug... before I pull the pin on the tensioner I rotate the engine by hand 9 full crank revolutions.... easiest way to do this is have a friend help.. u lay down so u can get a good grip on a 1/2" ratchet put into the crank bolt. (reason u lay down is cause if the motor has good compression it will get real hard to rotate at times).. this is where your friend comes in.. he/she watches the mark on the plate on the crank pulley while you rotate it.. 9 complete rotations... at this point all marks should be lined back up perfectly... if not then you need to redo it again.. if it is all good then pull the pin to tension it up and ur done.

I hope this helps.

Steve

An easy way to tell if the rear balance shaft is in time is to turn the sprocket until the arrow (timing mark) points straight up and then let it go. If the weight of the shaft makes the pulley fall to the left it's correct, if it falls to the right it's not in time.

Sounds like the intake being off by a tooth was the reason for your loss in power but the buzzing is still the balance shaft being out of phase.

when doing it spin the oil pump arrow until it is about to point to the front case arrow and let go if it turns itself to line up then the balance shaft is in the right place. If not rotate 360 and try again until success. This is easier than getting under the car pulling the bolt and shoving the screw driver allowing you to pull the dirt from the back of your block into your oil system.....

yes it was out of phase!
i set it proper, and went i did the final torque on the upper tensioner bolt
SNAP
CURSE WORDS SAID
proceeded to drill into the broken off bolt, i have these super good drill bits, they are very hard, and very brittle. drilling was going very well, i was in enough for the ez out, then

SNAP

now im extra fruit and banana

i could just pull the front case but im just pulling the engine now.

sigh

just to follow up
all back together now for a few days here, no leaks, thats what i was most worried about, i hate removing the front case, last time i did it i had a leak and had to remove the engine AGAIN and redo it.
it runs smooth as silk to 7000 rpm, no rattles!
thanks mirageman!

now i have mad boost creep! i guess the cam being off a tooth was helping that out, now that the engine is pumping more air, the wastegate is useless!
damn it why didnt i port this turbo!
the guy i bought it from had it on his evo 3. (yeah i got an evo3 FROM an evo3!) and ive seen that car, it has at least a 2.5 exhaust with no cat
i dont understand how it could have been working properly?
the evo 3 has higher compression, bigger cams, it should be more prone to creep on that car than mine, mine is a stock 7.8 to 1 1990

i removed the wastegate arm and wired the flap wide open. it starts boosting at 3000 (3rd gear) and by 6500 or so its at 20 psi!

so i think ill just stick a restrictive exhaust tip on it.
ill just port the turbo next time its off haha

if u have the flapper open it shouldnt build boot at all... if that is a diff wg than original u might need to shim it with some washers where it bolts to the cold side..
and glad to see its running better now.

yeah, i know it shoildnt be building boost, and it builds boost pretty darn well with the gate wide open! with the gate hooked up, it holds 10psi for maybe 1000 rpm.

the evos must have had a pretty restrictive exhaust for these to work properly

So I take it you just eliminated the balance shafts? Glad I could help.

haha. no i did not, although i easily could have while i was in there, i kind of believe the mumbo jumbo on jacks website about harmonics and clutch drag. and i dont like the extra oil pressure you get and the porting the hole and cutting the spring to get it back where it has to be

but
being as i AM A TOTAL WEIGHT WEENIE
im surprised i didnt

So why pull the engine and the front case? Think I missed something somewhere. :P

to extract the broken timing belt tensioner bolt, i snapped it when i reredid the belt, with the rear balance shAft clocked proper

car does not make any more power than before, actually. still 240ish and itll just have to stay there until i get link. at this power and boost level it would be a lot more fun with the 14b.
