Im doing a basic budget rebuild on my 6 bolt motor. .020 oversize on oe style pistons and stock rods.
the crank will be getting a micropolish and new bearings.

I have never rebuilt a 4g63 before and my colt is really my first foray into turbo mitsu stuff. Needless to say im hooked. With this rebuild in mind i have been reading till my eyes bleed all about engine rebuilding. I came across information regarding the press fit balls on the crank that mitsubishi used to seal off the access holes for cross drilling the oil galleries.

one guy was saying how important it is to remove them and clean the galleries real well. Then tap and install set screws to seal off the hole. Now i cant argue with cleanliness but removing those balls and rethreading in set screws sounds like a lot of work

To the guys who have been doing this a while and have rebuilt many motors whats your opinion on that?
As always much appreciation to your prior experience :D

yes. custom made nozzle. glued a pipe into an old nozzle and pinched the end till I had the right spray pattern. lot less work than removing balls and tapping.

So no one else has any thoughts on this?
besides lancerman who has come up with a pretty brilliant solution.

We have done many, many engines without removing them. However. If you have ever taken them out, you would be very surprised at what is still left in the crank. I assure you that trying to pressure wash inside there will do you no good. You have to scrape the stuff out. Every time we have done it there is loose stuff just sitting in there that comes out with no effort. My next engine will have them removed.

For those that don't like playing with balls, some high detergent oil will help break down the gunk over time. I did about 3k miles on Mobil1 Clean (it's discontinued now though) and everything looks like new. Granted I was changing the oil every weekend I was bored and had $30 in my pocket.
