I have a 61 from a 89 colt in my 94 mirage.. I replaced the water pump 2 times in the past 6 months (thinking that was the issue but I dont think it is.. got both pumps from rock auto)

issue is im leaking fluid from somewhere in the timing area... but only under hard boost.. its not alot but makes a mess..

at first I thought it was oil from the front crank seal.. but the oil level has stayed the same the past 2 months.. and the coolant lvl went from topped of to just barely seeing a thin coating on the t-stat when I pop the cap.. it only took 1/2 a cup to top it back off.. so its not a bad leak just under hard boost.. all bolts are tight..all gaskets are good.. is there something on the 61 that is diff than the 63 that I might be missing here?.. it sucks cause I cant run a timing cover cause it will soak the belt really bad..as it is now it just soaks the axle boot and area down there..

any help/info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Steve

ps. the reason I thought it was oil is because im using the evans waterless coolant.. and its kinda slick/ oil based feeling.. but seeing how the oil lvl is the same and coolant barely goes down is whats leaning me towards that.

If its coolant it can be the water pump gasket or o ring even the head gasket. If its oil it can be the main seal, oil pump gasket, oil filter housing or the oil pan gasket and again the head gasket. Good luck you'll get it..

all that is new... 3 diff wp gaskets..made sure everything was perfectly smooth... used razor blade..carb cleaner and 240 grit sand paper to make sure it was smooth....O-ring leak would put fluid all over the front.. this is only on the back side of motor.. and its clean up top so I know its not the HG.. im just stumped as where else it could come from lol...grimlems at work lol.

Only under boost seems like it's a blown HG allowing pressurization of the coolant jacket. How much boost? Do you run head studs or stock bolts?

also forgot to mention it did this with the stock 1.6 head..and still with the 1.8 head and diff gasket.. so im pretty sure its not a blown HG since it was 2 diff ones... thanks.

Just throwing out ideas. Do you think the block has issues like warped deck or a crack somewhere or maybe a scar on the water pump sealing surface?

If it's leaking at the same place, I would side with Shawn J with regards to flatness (pitting, scoring, cracks, etc) of component mating surfaces, and or warping (deck at coolant holes).

Add a dye to your cooling system.
Buy some UV yellow lense glasses.
Borrow a UV light.
Grab a coolant pressure testing kit and pressurize the system.

You will see it fluoresce when it starts to leak.

Boost only, means combustion gases.

240 grit sounds kinda rough for a sealing surface, a razor blade held perpendicular to the surface will leave a smooth finish without gouges, I've seen too many scary sealing surfaces mostly attacked with a flapdisc or scotch brite disc, I was taught never to use anything too aggressive, its alot easier to scrape a little longer than figure out how to repair the groove you've ground into a surface. Just my 2 cents
