Post subject:  How much boost should I be running?

Hey ya'll,

Just curious how much boost I should safely be able to run on the following setup (all thanks to 89mirageman!):
Jdm 61t
14b
1g manifold/2g 02
1g 440's
custom fmic
2.5in turboback
Chipped ECU
Usually 93 octane, though sometimes 91

I assumed 14-15psi would be about where I should be, but I just wanted to make sure. If I can go higher, say 17-18psi, is the 14b even efficient at that boost level?

What do you have for a fuel pump? If you have an upgraded pump, you should be able to run 15psi with no problems, maybe even up to 17psi. There's no much point in going higher than that unless you're on race gas. I'd highly recommend a wideband air/fuel ratio monitor of some kind, without it you're sort of tuning blind.

As of now I am running a stock pump. I assumed this would be my major hurdle in increasing boost. What sort of pump upgrade is common at this stage and does the tank need to be dropped to install a new pump? I remember reading you can access it, I think, from inside the car. Would the pump be something I actually need to upgrade or if I hope to continue my upgrades (e.g. turbo)?

I'd like to get a wideband soon, perhaps an EGT probe in there too, eh?
thanks mate

Throw in a Walbro 255HP, do the fuel pump rewire (adding a relay and thicker wiring), then get yourself an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator. That'll take care of most of your fuel needs for quite awhile. Yes, the tank does need to be dropped. The only thing accessible from inside is the gas gauge sending unit.

I was having fuel starvation at around 16lbs with my 14b/450's. After I did the 255hp and the AFPR, I cranked my mbc up to 20lbs until the 14b finally gave up, then in went an "evoIII" big 16g and I ran that on 22lbs with the same fuel setup without issue.

Get the wideband, skip the EGT.

^^ Agree. I haven't had a working EGT gauge in probably 10 years. Nothing has broken yet!

What would you all recommend for a pump and fpr? I was reading from an older thread on here that because our fuel pressure rail is quite large, there is no reason to upgrade it. Though I assume there isn't a way one can attach an adjustment on our stock rail, right? Do the 1G dsm rails and aftermarket rail/fpr's bolt on to the 61t? I'd like something relatively trouble free (i.e. common upgrade path).

Mechacode already gave you the best advice as far as fuel pumps are concerned. The Walbro 255HP is the cheapest and easiest to install of any fuel pump upgrade that also flows the most amount of fuel. Beware of chinabay knockoffs.

The stock regulator is OK, but you still want to upgrade, because the increased flow from the Walbro 255 will overrun the stock regulator...it can't quite keep up. Any brand of FPR will do, since they're all basically the same design. I have an Aeromotive A1000 on my car, and it's served me well over the years. Lots of places sell installation kits that make it pretty easy.
