Post subject:  4g61 Guru's...what turbo to run

this is for people who are still running the 1.6... ( think most are the Colorado guys)... im looking to replace my 14b turbo.. I have the 1.6 bottom end with the 1.8 dohc head with a fp cast manifold. stock cams for now. looking at getting 264 intake/272 exh setup.. but not set on that yet..my car is stock auto trans/converter with the kiggly mod setup.. I had heard alot of diff stories so figured I would ask here... some say you wont be able to spool up a evo 3 16g but yet others have said you can spool up a 20g with no issues.... but its just all hearsay as none of them have a 1.6..nor a auto trans..

so what would be best.. getting a 14b..a evo 3 16g.. or a 20g turbo?? car is a DD with some street and track racing.. so im not looking for top hp.. just something with some umph when needed..

Thanks.

Steve

That's not too far off of my setup but I do have a manual trans. 1.6 bottom with 10:1 pistons, 1.8 head, 1G DSM intake manifold, 264/272 cams and a s16g. It makes 260whp pump, 311whp E85. The 16g is still pretty laggy. Full boost is between 3500-4000rpm. I daily drive mine though too to the tune of 100+mi a day to work and back.

Small 16G really ? If yes i'm very desapointed with my similar setup :
Stock short bloc, 1.8L head with 264's and bigger port intake like 1G, small 16G rebuild with 7cm EVO3 hot side.

Remember this thread now : http://www.4g61t.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=33399

I keep my 14B CHRA for spool testing latter.

wow thats nice..i was hoping for better numbers like this.. but last week i got it tuned and it got a max of 173whp @ 17 psi in the 14b... tune was way off initial pull was 139 whp lol and mine has the stock pistons and cams..

20G's are too expensive, and would likely be too laggy. You could definitely make more power than you're making on the 14B, but not much point in bothering. If you really want to be a baller, get the FP 68HTA 16G thing that isn't really a 16G at all. That would cost about the same as a brand new 20G and likely spool faster and have more power potential. There are numerous people making over 400AWHP on them.

I have a 14b with 1g manifold on my car. The engine is a completely stock 1.6 with 200k miles.
I have a full 3" exhaust and custom small stock fmic off a mini cooper. Im running between 13 and 16lbs.
I feel its pretty decently tuned with megasquirt on speed density.

Im no expert and its my first and only turbo car but I feel that even the 14b seems kinda laggy. By looking at datalogs boost starts at 3k and full boost by 4k if you time it right on the street. By timing it right i mean hovering at the boost threshold before you punch it. If you floor it from well below the boost threshold full boost comes later at 4.5k or even 5k. The 1.6 seems pretty weak before boost kicks in so that prolly makes it seem laggier? Definitely laggier than the stock 11b. The car really seems powerful under boost though way, way more power than stock last year. The front tires will break loose a bit under full boost and rpm in first gear now. I have no idea on power level but I took it to the strip ,also a first, last month and my fastest time was 16.3  Which really put things in perspective for me after all the reading and learning ive got from this site.

Ive never felt the difference of a 14b to a 16g on any car but i would say for me any more lag wouldnt make it very much fun on the street any more. You would have to be all staged ahead of time with your rpms up everywhere you go to get any power when you floor it. Which is a little inconvenient on the street. I could be doing it ^^ wrong though too lol.
Hope the info helps any.

Here's my dyno sheet that explains it all. Runs start around 2500, boost was 17-19psi and really kicks in about 3600-3700rpm. Also, its worth noting that I don't have a good FMIC, I run a Supra SMIC and 2.5" piping. http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/smokn ... ort=3&o=31

I plan to run a 20g sized turbo on my current 1.6. Looking for 300whp on pump. As soon as I sell my Scion I'll be diving head first into it. I ran a T3 10cm2 20g on my last 1.6 motor and it was a little laggy but still very fun to drive, no numbers for it though.

Thanks Shawn.
I hope obtain a better spool with my setup, short tubing with WAIC and external WG controlled by Link

wow my dyno pull curve is totally diff lol... boost goes up then down then back up....

and so im guessing with cams i should be able to run a 16g then..looks like the 20g is too much for this lil motor.. I would be happy with 250 whp with auto drivetrain deduction..

here is my crappy pic of the dyno.

The bigger intake port from the 1.8 head don't help the turbo spool specially with the 1.6L bloc, small intake port has better air flow velocity for this motor i think.
Also the FP race manifold has bigger port's, same story...
I know that now ](*,)

An 6cm turbine housing help alot VS the 7cm for lowering the low power rpm zone.

So maybe, small 16G or 14B with 6cm turbine housing is the best for our stock 4G61T (street and track racing)

539$ but it need an DSM turbine housing swap

Finding a 6cm or 7cm Mitsubishi housing in good shape is not easy, but that is a really good deal for a genuine Mitsubishi 20G. This turbo would be fun on something that came with a T3 style flange, like my Volvo.

Didn't realize they were that cheap. Maybe I'll sell one of my old Hahn pieces and pick up one of these new.
