I am trying to help my friend diagnose his electrical issue.

He has a 95 GSX with a 6 bolt engine. <---which has been like that for a while and ran fine last week.

The problem: No start.
With the battery hooked up, starter hooked up, and alternator installed, but leaving the alt power wire unbolted, all is normal - (engine off of course).

When plugging in the power wire to the alternator…which has no exposed wires and is in good condition cosmetically, the whole engine/trans is positively charged. One of the top ground wires on the intake manifold we used as our test wire. When touching the intake, it sparks. the throttle cable becomes very hot. Any ground wire when detached and reattached will spark….on the trans, engine, anywhere.

I have no idea where to start. I did bring him a spare alternator which we have not thrown on yet to see if that makes a difference.

Any thoughts?

Try a different alternator. Yours is shorted internally.

will do.

Could the short inside the alt be corrected if I were to take it apart?

Not worth the trouble, easier to just replace. Might be a good learning experience though.

thats what I like.

I replaced some brushes on an alternator few years for pennies compared to a $150 alt.

Plus, its a original mitsu alt. the aftermarket or reman'd ones never last as long.
