I'm ready to flip a coin. I have a 4g61t pulled out of my mirage. transmission and engine were both good but head needed a rebuild. Tranny is cleaned up and sitting on a stand. Exhaust manifold was badly cracked and stock turbo was shot. I'm debating wether or not to build the 4g61t with the usual 1g add ons or just get a 4g63 and call it a day. It just seems like 4g61 parts are hard to come by. But, used 6 bolt 63's are now 25 years old and probably need a top to bottom rebuild for high dollars.

Is it worth porting the 61 head? I talked to slowdsm and he said it's not even worth it. I thought about getting a 4g67 head but by the time I do that I'm halfway to a 63 after I rebuild the head. Help! What should I do!

the only reason I have the 61 in my mirage is cause I had it sitting here..and im poor (living on disability).. If I ever have to redo this motor all would just opt for the 63. even with the 1.8 head on this 61 u can still tell its alot less power than a stock 63..

with that said... if you have a 63 i would put it in.. if you dont have 1 I do have the good stock 61 head just needs 1 cam gear and ready to roll.. but then I would still find and build a 63 to swap in later... at least u would be able to drive it and get used to it..

Offer it up for a good deal, and someone may pick it up and use it properly.

If certain parts need to be separated, see if you can find homes for all of it at the same time but that's an ideal scenario.

I'd vote for a 4g63 because of overall cost, but you should keep the fuel rail amongst some other 4g61t specific parts.

If you like shifting higher in the RPM window, a 4g61 will win for Zing factor, but the 4g63 makes for a more potent/torquey bottom end, and

you won't need to shift as high, thus saving syncros during daily use, even with high end GL4 synthetic oils.

A stock 4g61t is pretty sluggish, and tame. Waking it up with 1G bolt on parts and cams, would make it worth while.

A stock 4g63t would be decent, and will knock your socks off once it gets the bolt on treatments and a tune to match.

In simple form, you will still find ways to outdue this outdated suspension, with little effort.

Basic motor, get it running and running well with proper tune-up parts.

Go over the whole car, for wiring and suspension and brakes.

Consider upgrades last, or the car will not likely be able to handle the new found power.

These are thoughts I had years ago, and they ring true for me today, as I sit debating more suspension tweaks and such.

Moral:

You will have fun with either motor.

Thanks for the input. Brakes and suspension are all completely rebuilt. O always do motor and tranny last on all my builds. I want this to be special. Its probably my last project. Im gonna go with a 63t. Now, to find the right one.

What are your goals for this car? Maybe it's just been a while since I've driven something fast but I put a 14b/450's/fmic on jdmhotness's car and that thing flies. Stock 4G61t under the hood. If the engine was in good shape I'd freshen it up and put it right back in. Guess I'm the odd ball here.

If you can't decide between these two engines I say 4g67! lol Hey I have been thinking that a 1.8L maybe worth to try with some 2.0L turbo pistons

If you bore a 1.8 to use turbo pistons wouldn't that just make it a 2.0? I thought the deck height was the same on the 67 and 63? They use the same t-belt, correct?

If I bought a rebuilt 6 bolt 4g63t long block from karking or somewhere could i basically build the whole engine from the 61 I have on the stand? What else would I have to buy?

I imagine this is what the op means.
If he sourced a bare longblock 63 could he use all 61 externals and accessories to create a complete drop in package?
