 Post subject: cam timing issues

Hi all Hoping you could Help,
Have just replaced the head gasket on my 4g63t and all went well except now while trying to get the Cam Belt back on.
I cant seem to get the timing lined up if I line up the crank I cant line up cams its like pistons are hitting valves?
and if I line up cams then I cant line up crank same problem please help

You have to line everything up but the exhaust cam will want to be a half tooth/full tooth retarded (counter-clockwise), you'll have to keep a wrench on it to keep it from moving due to spring pressures. If you plan on doing it again, I highly suggest the timing tools, makes timing super easy.

You mean clockwise, as when tensioned it pulls the exhaust cam counter-clockwise.
Use a couple of spring clamps to keep the belt in place on the cams where you need them.

4g61t's were more prone to cams popping back, than were the stock 4g63t's, but those spring clamps are a god send. You may still pop the belt over a tooth, but you'll get it.
Yes, grab the timing tool adapters, one for locking the cams together while in time, and the other is for the tensioner rotation while in the car.

You have to use a wrench to keep it tensioned clockwise since it wants to spin back counterclockwise. Maybe I wasn't quite clear in what I said earlier. :butthead:
