Post subject:  Transmission question

I'm building a 89 colt GL, and I have a 7 bolt 4g64 with a 2g head setup, would the 4g15 transmission work with it? If so, which 7 bolt flywheel do I need? Which clutch choices would I be able to use?

Thanks

Yes the transmission will bolt onto your 7 bolt block.

I have no idea what flywheel or clutch you would use. If you were to find a km210, which is the OE trans for the Colt/Mirage Turbo, you should be able to use a GST(FWD) turbo flywheel and clutches.

My opinion: you probably will not be able to use the 4g15 transmission with a 7 bolt without having a flywheel custom made. And given the diminutive size of the 4g15 flywheel and small clutch/pressure plate choices you will be fighting clutch slip.

Thanks for your help. I was going to pick up a 2g transmission but wanted to make sure if I can use a 4g15 without much headache. Well I'll just sell the 2 colt transmissions I have for the 2g transmission.

Which two CSM transmissions do you have?

A 91 and a 89, both from Plymouth colt GL hatchbacks. The transmission part number I can post that later today

That's okay. Some of the '92 Sedans have stouter transmissions with larger bell housings that are either the same as or very similar to non-turbo 1g DMS transmissions. But your two are not from a '92 so no dice!

Don't forget to update your profile with location, btw i would recommend you to get a turbo transmission, if you can't a f5m31 will do the job too...

I don't recommend using the 4g15 tranny for anything more than stock 4g15 power, MAYBE n/t 63 power. The clutch is just tiny. When I bought my current CSM, the guy had a 63t swapped in using the 15's tranny (the "halfass" swap). As soon as it saw even a few psi of boost, the clutch would go up in smoke. That tranny went into the scrap pile as soon as I got it home and a proper f5m33 went in.

You need a 92.5-94 FWD NA DSM flywheel. Like mentioned above though, if this is going to be a turbo engine save yourself a headache and put in a better transmission from the beginning.
