I'm about to use a 1.8l head on a 2.0l block in my 1990 Eagle Talon awd turbo...

Tiny bump in compression won't mean a thing. Tuning still has to be performed anyway. It was an issue in the old days with 9.5:1 and running the JDM AWD code that bumped timing up really fast and kept it fairly high, on 91+ octane gas. The Japanese had better fuel and well, wasn't an issue for them. If the motor was out of tune, made for lots of knock once upon a time. Now you have self-tuning programs, SwedeDensity .... and Speed Density/Map systems running into the management of older engines. Good times if you ask me!
