Hi there.
My name is Grant, and I'm working on my daughter's 1989 Mitsubishi Lancer GSR with a 4G61 engine, and an auto trans. A fire started after the spark plug leads were arcing by the coil pack, and burnt the engine wiring. I've replaced the burnt wiring, and installed a new coil pack, but I'm stumped on what the thing is on a small bracket on the intake, cam belt side of the engine. It has a two pronged plug that comes out of the main wiring harness with two white wires. It's about 1 1/4" long or so. It has a Mitsi symbol on it, and the number 284L02901. I'm at work right now, and can't upload pics, sorry. It's driving me nuts!!
Cheers
Grant
PS Could it be a tach filter?
PPS A bit of searching tells me that it IS a tach filter!

Yes, I believe that would be your tach filter, it's the only thing in the area with that description, we could of course tell you 100% with a pic. Hope that helps.
