ECU is seeing a tach signal, but the tach isn't working. Searched hi/lo, here/there.....other forums. Can't find a solid answer. Why would I see RPM's as I log but not on the tach? I don't wanna throw parts at it just yet.

The ecu And tach get their rpm from the coil packs. Not one from another. Could be a bad tach.

That's what I'm leaning towards.

The tach does need a filter though. It reads without it but not at all right.

has it worked at all since the swap? if not then possibly you didnt connect the gauge to the ecu correctly...

I double checked all interior wiring at the ECU and all the interior connections associated. The car hasn't been on the road since the late 90's due to a timing belt so I have no clue as to the status of the gauge prior to the swap. It is however a factory turbo car so I didn't have to touch anything in the way of wiring in reference to the tach.

So, if you can find the wire that feeds the cluster/ECU and tap into it, you should be able to read the signal with a DVOM. Just have to find the correct procedure in the FSM, if its listed in some form of diag tree.

I have been stuck with this problem too, i ran a wire from the tach filter to the inside of the car and yeah i got the tach moving but is not exact, so i don't know what else could be wrong, my wiring its from a 90 GST

There's 2 parts need to get the tach to work. The 90 style tach interface on the coil packs and the noise filter.

Image

Heres an explanation.
Quote:
'90 DSM:

- Tacho Interface monitors the ECU/Power Transistor's switching of both coil primaries, and adds the signals together so there are four electrical pulses output for every engine cycle; one for each cylinder fired. This signal is sent to both ECU, and tachometer via the noise filter.

- The ECU recieves the raw Tacho Interface signal on pin 109, and uses this to determine when to turn on the fuel pump. A failure in this signal reaching the ECU = no fuel pump.

- The Noise Filter is a simple RC circuit. It places a current limiting resistor in line between the Tacho Interface and the tachometer, and a noise filtering capacitor between the signal and ground. If the noise filter is not grounded (bolted to the IM) the tach will not work. Notorious failure part on the '90 model car.

'91-94 DSM:

The basic operation for the later DSM is practically (but NOT) identical, only the Tacho Interface and Noise Filter are housed inside of the (8 pin) Power Transistor. The catch in the circuit is that the later '91+ ECU provides a reference voltage on pin 109, and the Power Transistor grounds it out to produce the square wave signal for the tach (as well as fuel pump activation).

The 89-92 mirage cluster will only work with a tacho interface on the coil pack and the noise filter, although mine works fine and worked fine in the past without a noise filter. It will also work with an MSD DIS2 and a tach adapter. It will also work directly from an arc-2 tach output.

The tacho interface on the coil pack goes bad, a lot. You may need to try multiple.
