Like title states, I'm looking into this as a cheaper way to put new pistons in that are still a slight upgrade. I have read a little on it, but am not sure of all the details. If someone has more info about the procedure and what all needs to be machined that would be great. I read that it is .040 over stock for a 4g63 compared to stock Evo X, you also need to get the wrist pin bored out on the rod 1mm over a 2g rod? and that the 1g rod also needs to be thinner width wise at the top to fit into the piston. Oh and that the pistons go in normally compared to like evo 8-9 pistons (backwards, if you know what i mean)
Would it be safe to machine out the 1g rods to make those fit? or not worth the worry?
Or where is a good place to source cheaper than $400 aftermarket pistons for a 4g63t. Im on a budget.
I can find Evo X pistons and rods (stock) no miles for around $250 a set. + some machine work

Thanks

This is the first I've heard of this. I would avoid it, I've heard the 4b11 internals are not nearly as stout as the 4g63.

If you want a cheap upgrade, I would stick with 2g or evo pistons on 1g rods. Or just keep an eye open on the link forum or dsmtuners for some lightly used pistons.

to me buying a brand new set of 4g63 DSM pistons will be alot cheaper than paying to have all this modifying work done..and without the risk of it not working.

The 4B11T is an 86mm bore, and the 4G63 is 85mm. Boring the block 1mm over is kind of risky, you really shouldn't punch it out that much. It's also expensive machine work if you're looking for a "budget" type of build. EVO 8/9 pistons are probably a better option, and a lot of people have done this already, so there is a lot of documentation on it. Do a quick search on DSMTuners.

Honestly though, if you're really, really budget-minded, just stick with 2g pistons.

yeah thats what ive been thinking also, just wanted some more respectable opinions on it. Talked to machine shop today and he said he has done it but it lots of machine work and rather not do it. just thought i would bring it up for talking about as not much out there on it.

I believe it's the aluminum block that is the problem. Start making over 450WHP and the 4b11 needs to be sleeved. Other than that, the X is great at making power.

The rods are the biggest weak-point in that motor, because the engines produce so much torque, they like to bend. There are people making 900whp on the 4B11 motor now.

I built a 4G63 with Evo 8 pistons on 1st gen rods with ACL bearings and a 1st gen crank and it made a lot of power. With a 20g at 20 psi, I was able to put 308HP to the wheels. I had a ported 1st gen head with 1mm oversized valves, 3 angle valve job, dual valve springs, Evo 3 cams, and adjustable cam gears. That Colt was an absolute death trap. It would spin the street tires through 4th gear and bark them going into 5th. I spanked a new Corvette GS and a Lexus ISF. Don't underestimate stock internals though, my buddy in Florida made a little over 500WHP on stock 1st gen internals. If this engine would be in a Colt, it would almost be undriveable unless you had AWD. What are you building this motor for?
