Just to confirm, i'm gonna be swapping in a 4g63 into my gt. I will need a fwd right, or can I use an awd?? I have an awd flywheel on the engine, i guess i could just use the 4g61flywheel if i get in a jam. I hate rushing stuff but I really neex my car back. |

You can use the stock 1.6 flywheel, or a FWD DSM flywheel. However, the clutches are different between the two, IIRC. |

If you have an AWD 4g63t flywheel, you can use it. You will need a 90-99 4g63t clutch to go along with it. You can also use a FWD 4g63t flywheel, same rule applies, must use 4g63t clutch. You can also use the original 4g61t flywheel, but you will need to use a 4g61t clutch or a non-turbo DSM clutch (10mm smaller diameter) If you use the AWD 4g63t flywheel, you may need an AWD 4g63t starter plate. If you use the FWD 4g63t flywheel or 4g61t flywheel, you can re-use the 4g61t starter plate. |

Thanks Tonus, that's what I was looking to hear, the engine I'm buying came out of an awd, it still has an awd flywheel on it, so I should be able to get a clutch and just bolt everything on. The starter of the 61 should work too right?? Thanks for the help guys, |

I had an Awd flywheel in my last build with a km210 and the starter wouldn't contact the flywheel. I had the fwd dsm starter plate, as it matches the km210... |

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the awd flywheel will not work with a fwd trans. Like Nate said, the starter gear won't be able to contact the teeth on the flywheel. Unless Tonus knows a way around this. |

The AWD flywheel WILL work with a 4g61t trans, you just need an AWD starter plate. The FWD starter plate places the starter in a totally different location.Quote: The starter of the 61 should work too right??
Yes, the 61 starter is the same as a manual trans 4g63t starter.

But the awd starter plate doesn't fit on a fwd trans unless you slot the holes in the case or something. Is that what you mean? |

I didn't think the AWD/FWD starter plates had a different bolt-pattern. Perhaps I am wrong on this one, haha. *edit* - I found this. There's a very good chance it could be wrong.

Who knows? All I do know is that I placed a 1g fwd turbo starter plate up against a 1g awd trans and all of the holes lined up except for the two for the starter. This leads me to think that the only way to make this work would be to slot the mounting holes in the bell housing itself, not sure how well that would work though. I vote the OP should try it and give us an update. |

That is wrong, seriously it is. I remember it being wrong as I tried to follow that article when doing mine. I can take pictures of all the parts tonight. If someone will text and remind me to do so. * edit. I also had to change the flywheel in the 2.0 na I was building, because I put in an Awd one by mistake. All bolts up with the fwd starter plate, but won't engage with the starter. |

I just did the swap in the lego car as people ha\/e called it on here... put the awd flywheel on (all we had at the time. couldnt get the 61 bolts off) first attempt I used a awd flywheel and starter plate.. the starter holes didnt line up correctly so I couldnt mount the starter.. second attempt i used the awd FW and swapped in a FWD plate...starter wouldnt touch the teeth it just spun..(awd FW is smaller diameter) third attempt.. i got a fwd flywheel..swapped the starter plate to the original 61 just to make sure.. and it worked great.. when it was out..the fwd and 61 starter plates are the same.. the awd starter bolt holes are just a lil off to clock the starter to hit the teeth on the smaller flywheel. Ste\/e. |

I purchased the AWD flywheel and clutch years ago when I changed them out in my old Mirage and they did not fit. I had read the article that Tonus posted from Sport Compact Car and was convinced that the previous owner changed the transmission to a FWD DSM one. After doing some research, the car had the original km210 and it needed the FWD DSM flywheel/clutch to work. Since I had already bought the AWD stuff, I swapped in an AWD transmission we had into the car and put a viscous eliminator in to to run FWD. This time around I am going to purchase the FWD stuff for my Colt. |
