Post subject:  Exhaust Manifold... Options?
The trusty Colt has at long last suffered a parts failure which will have me turning wrenches. The exhaust manifold cracked where the passage from the #4 cylinder joins the collector. Although I have a parts car, and can probably get that one off to install, I have no guarantee that it would be in very great shape. So, before I head off in that direction, I thought I'd check and see if there are any other options for the 4g61T.

I see on eBay a tubular unit for the 4G63: Item number: 220860923842

Is there such a thing as a bolt-on unit for the Colt? I just had a custom exhaust done a year ago and don't want to make any change that would not leave the Turbo in the same spot it is.

Don't buy any of those manifolds off of ebay. They will fit but it won't last very long.

FP's manifold is great, made out of the same stuff as turbo hotsides so it'll handle the heat and is pretty close to a tubular manifold.

Second that,, Buy that cheap manifold and it will work fine if you dont mind tweaking it now and then. After it seperates, have it welded the right way. If I needed a header now, I would go that route. Fix it later.. Seems you need something asap!

Keep in mind guys that if he's running a stock or unported turbo the fp manifold will be way too big for him (both on the 4g61 head and turbo outlet). A stock 2g manifold would be a good option, you can get them for 50 normally and can port it later if you move to a bigger turbo.

Exactly what I have, this car is STOCK other than the 2.25" custom exhaust from the Turbo to the rear bumper.

Spending performance-related funds on running the kart; I stopped autocrossing the Colt a dozen years ago. No near plans to hop it up. The car now has about 105K on it, I am the only owner. Not a garage queen, needs paint, windshield, etc.... but only one tiny spot of rust. Original motor never molested, original clutch, etc.....

As far as immediacy of the need, I don't drive the car in the winter, and it is nearly October, and I am in Michigan.... Right now though, it takes a cheaper-to-feed option (Compared to the Suburban) out of the vehicle pool while the weather is still snowless. I can live with not running it again until spring if I have to, October is already half full. That, and the bank doesn't seem to be holding much of my cash hostage right now.... a payday is coming end of October.

Like I said, I do have the parts car, but removing only one manifold from a motor (and installing an already loose one) seems to be an attractive path to follow right now, if it were cost effective (yep, cheap...) :-?

So, the 4G63 manifolds fit the '61 head? Then the issue is that the ports are bigger than needed? And, thanks for the advice to stay away from the less than reliable fleabay tube set.

The 63t stuff will fit on the 61t, it's essentially the same motor but with more deck height. If you want cheap, get a 2g manifold but watch for cracks, most of them have them. I wouldn't worry about flow numbers on a stock motor, factory holes never line up anyways and the fp would outlast the car. Just depends on how much you want to spend, 50 or 200.

I think your confusing 1g and 2g manifolds. It's the 1g's that crack a lot, I've never had a 2g crack which is the main reason people were swapping to them back in the day before fp and sbr produced manifolds. Plus the fact you can port them to flow really well.

The three that I had over the years all had cracks, two of them had cracks you could only see on the inside. Again, it's up to the OP on how much he wants to spend and if he wants to go cheaper, he needs to double check for cracks.

Yea the one I had developed a crack at the divider and the one that is currently on my bros swapped 94 galant ls cracked at the same exact spot.
