Post subject:  Exhaust..From scratch...

Looking at upgrading my exhuast to 2.5" mandrel. However, I still have only the piddly 11B turbo. My question is this: Is it a better plan to try and scoop up a 16G or even 14B turbo first before I even touch exhaust, or will I notice a big difference going to a 2.5 Exhaust. Bonus points if someone can source me a relatively cheap 2.5 dowmpipe (I take it this would be designed for a 2G fwd T/E/L, unless of course that wouldn't go with aforementioned 11b).

when swapping the turbos, the exahust doesn;t have be modified. You can run a 14B and swap it to a 16G and not have any problems. go for a 3", 2.5" is good but, bigger is better.

So the turbo outlet to Downpipe Bolting is universal from 11b up to 16g? Just want to make sure if I manage to find all that I need (3" downpipes out there anywhere?), that I can put it on my 11b until I can afford the 16G. This is, unfortunately, going to be a gradual upgrade.(that is, unless someone offers me a wonderful package deal :) )

The very first mod I did was a 2.5 inch turbo back. It makes a huge difference. You will notice the first words out of peoples mouths that upgrade to turbo first is a big complaint about lag. The flange on the stock down pipe is only about an inch across. Greg

So now I'm torn in the perpetual debate of 2.5" or 3"........I think it depends on the downpipe I find first! I'll post in the FS/Wanted I'm looking for one, and see what kind of responses I get. Anyone want to settle it by flogging their 2.5 or 3" DP to me? Used is best due to sad currency value in Canada and even sadder personal currency flow.

i recommend 2.5 02 housing and then 2.5 downpipe. and then 3' catback or 3'downpipe and back. i know a guy whos running 2.5 02 housing and 2.5 downpipe with 3' cat back, he feels it the best combo just because its free flowing and causes not as much lag as a full 3' turbo back. thats just my $.o2

eh...who cares about lag...its not really even big..compared to something like a T88. If the exhaust is free flowing enough, so what if it causes a little lag before it spools...once it spools thats it...it doesnt lag again...

I have to agree with colt-r on his sizing. That's the exact path I'm planning on doing to my car. 2.5" is fine if you go with a custom piping route like a side exit exhaust. 3" will be large enough to not bother anything if you plan on keeping the stock system placement like I am. All the mounting and bolt patterns will be the same from the 11B all the way up to the 16G. It's only the Evo stuff that's different.

I dont quite agree with drinking and driving. I do agree with a 2.5 DP and flex, and then 3" cat back, also eliminate the across the back factory route, have the exhaust come right out the drivers side rear, rather than the passenger side.

Its probably cheaper to have a shop just make you a DP, it shouldnt cost you any more than $150CAD installed, that should include flange, pipe bending and flex pipe and gaskets. I got my whole exhaust installed for $600CAD, all 2.5" press bent though, and aluminized piping, high flow cat and some no name performance muffler.

?What is your budget for this mod?

For best results, find yourself a 14b, 450's, 1g mafs and ecu along with 2.5 exhaust and you will be more than happy for now.

Post subject:  Here's what I have to work with....

My budget for the whole upgrade will likely be just under a grand. I was curious as to how much a 1g MAF actually helps. I know I'd need the injectors and may need a better fuel pump (esp if I go 16G, though a 4g63t would make far better sense in the long term if I were thinking a big performance gain). The exhaust is my first step. As good deals for a turbo, injectors, etc come along, I'll be ready to take advantage. I blew $200 picking up some RX7 rims ($15 apiece, but a couple are pitted, so I may do a heavy priming and repaint) and some Used Toyo tires for summer use. I'll likely be going cat-les seeing as I live in Alberta, the haven for polluters. I hear a muffler can fit in the Cat area, so I'm looking for one that will fit and not be too loud. I hate the Fart Can Honda sound-much rather listen to my Turbo spool and Bov whistle. Thanks for all the input, and kep it coming! :)

The car will run crappy without the mafs, it can be had for about $40CAD, as well as the injectors, $40CAD for four., You are looking at about $100-150CAD for an ecu, around $250 tops for a good 14b, $100 or so for a 1g manifold. So then subtract all that off of $1G, and you should be able to get a nice exhaust bent up at shop, especially if you will be going without a catt.

Hey, if you can get me all those for the prices you say, you're my hero! :o Stuff is harder to come by out of the GTA. Feel free to charge me those prices if you can supply the stuff! I DID get a Talon 2L NA TB for 10 bucks, but haven't put it on yet (too bloody cold till recently), so that's another addon to do too.

I can only guide you where to go. and i assume you already know. www.ca.dsm.org
The parts we need for the 1.6 are usually useless or redundant for the talon boys, and they usually give the stuff away for that cheap. Just post in the want section if what you need is not in the for sell section. Patience is virtue too, some guys are greedy other guys are normal and fair, plus, if you areshipping within canada, shipping is rarely over $15CAD for shipping with Canada Post 7 day service.

There is a 90 ecu FS right now in Ottawa, $150, these are rare, the 90 ecu are harder to find than the 91-94. www.ca.dsm.org

The 90 is perfect for us 4g61ts cause there is no wires to swap as in the 91 94.
