Post subject:  4G63 swap in a 91 Mirage hatch......

I have a 91 Mirage Hatch with a 4G63 swapped into it.

I just got done with a suspension swap and now I have a bad shake in the front end that I can't narrow down.

Driving in a straight line it shakes, you can feel it in the steering wheel and chassis....feels like a bent wheel.

turning all the way left it shakes.

Turning all the way right it does not shake.

On the jackstands with the wheels straight it shakes the chassis
Same situation with turning the wheels.

I have done this without the wheels and brake calipers on, and it still shakes.

ARGH

Thanks

Alignment. Any time you fruit and banana with the suspension, you should get an alignment.

You could be a little more specific when you say suspension swap. That may help narrow the problem field.

Well just putting in the DSM springs and new(er) struts.....I didnt notice it before hand but I had really only driven the car 2 blocks.'

I doubt it's an alignment as it wouldnt cause the car to shake like it has a bent wheel.

Let me guess, you're not using a 1.6L turbo passenger front axle

I have no clue....the swap was done before I bought the car.

How do you tell? And what is the reason for the 1.6 turbo axle?

Reason is to prevent what you are experiencing :)

I had pictures somewhere. 1.6L axle is longer going into the trans (which is what you need if you use a mirage turbo trans or above). 1.5L axle does not "click" into trans and is not long enough inside the diff.

By the way, when I jack up the car the drivers side axle rubs up against where the control arm meets the frame.

Normal?

No. I'm surprised the CV boot is still intact.

Broken motor mount or wrong motor mounts would explain your axle rubbing.

Vibrating while up on jackstands would eliminate suspension or wheels since you have those removed. I'm guessing it doesnt do it in neutral, so it's a transmission or axle problem. If the axle was rubbing on the frame like you said, it could be a bent axle. This may have been caused by broken/wrong motor mounts.

Too many variables.

Yeah we need pics.

Pull axle, compare it to my picture. Take pic of trans mounts as well as trans to frame clearance.

Alright...Thanks guys.

Anyone have a link to the procedure for pulling the axles? This is my first front wheel drive car.

Loosen 32mm nut in hub
Take off both 17mm nut/bolt in the bottom of the strut
take off 12mm bolt holding the brake line to the strut
pull axle out

The hub nut will have to be loosened if not removed with the car on the ground, unless you have really good compressor equipment and an strong impact gun. 8) Everything else can be done on jack stands while the car is up in the air.
