After Jason suggested a turbo should be stored with oil in it, I went and filled up my 11b.

It still has the oil supply line attached to it, so I stuck a rubber hose in the banjo fitting which was snug enough to keep oil from leaking out.

Flipped the whole thing upside down and filled it with oil via the drain opening. Went to work for 8 hours, come home and there is oil leaking out the turbo outlet. The oil "compartment" didn't totally drain of oil, but it dropped a half an inch to an inch.

How bad is this? Should I say forget it and not store it w/oil in it or flip it around so it's upright and fill it up? Or is it too late and I've muffed up the turbo?

Which outlet are you referring to? The compressor outlet? If so, then the turbo is probably on its last leg. It may still be useful though. I've never had one leak there. Also, when my old roommate received his brand new turbo from one of the shops it had some type of screw-in plugs to keep the oil inside. But I just used rubber plugs in place of those when I stored one of mine.

Yeah, the compressor outlet that goes onto the intake manifold. It's seeping out there. Also looks like there is some in the vacuum nipple for the wastegate actuator.

Looks like both of my turbos are a POS. This is getting real discouraging. But I did chat with my buddy who sold me the 14b. He said he would help pay for rebuilding of the 14b if it needs it, so that's cool. I just want to drive the damn car though! Owned it for six months and it's never even been 100% yet.

I do turbo rebuilds here in Arizona. Most mitsu rebuilds run about $200 which includes bead blasting all parts, new bearings, thrust bearing, VSR balancing, 1 year warranty. This is for most TD04, TD05, and TD06 Mitsubishi Heavy Industry turbochargers. Turnaround is usually less than 1 week.

I will also have a full line of Mitsu/Garrett hybrid turbos that will be released at the beginning of next year.

If you want any more information, email me directly at bkriegsfeld@nplcc.com
