Post subject:  backfire?

This arvo I cranked the car over over and it didn't start. Did a check and then realised i hadn't plugged the coil pack in. Went to start again and after two hard cranks she backfired on me. A little worried! Checked my timing marks and all okay, my cam sprockets are 12oclock (dowels), 3oclock (exhaust) and 9oclock (intake) respectively, but i'm now doubting myself. So How many teeth can the exhaust cam sprocket be out before timing causes backfire?

Alternatively, i'm thinking i had an excess of fuel in the chamber since I was cranking so long without the coil pulgged in. Would this cause a backfire?

I'm not ruling out spark plugs, wires, coil pack, transistor or injectors.... Just worried about the important stuff first. Thanks.

Doesn't sound like a big problem, just had to clear out the fuel in the cylinders.

Have you seen the amount of fuel that is dumped out of the injectors in cold flood mode? When you test this with a single injector or even just the fuel rail in to an appropriately wrapped 2L bottle, you will understand just have much has gotten into the chamber and past the valves. Once you light up that mixture in the chamber, you will also light up anything in the exhaust stream and sometimes into the intake while cranking. Does the car run without problems now, or are you waiting to check if you have done everything correctly? If your timing marks are good, then you can run it without hesistation. If you have your timing off more than a tooth, you would have problems however. IIRC

Once it backfired i stopped cranking straight away and left it alone. I think maybe i'm being paranoid, because i was certain all my timing marks were okay. Before i plugged the coil in, during the hard cranking the motor seemed to be turning fine, no strange noises heard. Also when i removed a spark plug to check, it reeked of fuel.

Okay this afternoon when i get home from work, i'll try again. :( Keep you posted.

well when you think about it, it's a 50/50 shot you'd destroy your engine, and it's not like WE have anything to lose... HAHAHAHA, ok, i'm just kidding! but i'm glad your car fired right up! :D
