Post subject:  Temp gauge stays on C

It's been pretty cool here lately (30s and 40s at night), and for some reason, the temp gauge isn't moving into the middle range.

It IS moving...just barely. This has been going on for a few weeks now, and one day, when it was pretty warm out, the guage got to the middle. But since then, it's been cool out, and I've been seeing nothing but C.

Is it possible that the car just runs cool? I thought it was my coolant temp sensor (which had a somewhat loose connector). So I replaced AND the connector, and I'm still sitting on C.

FYI: I have a 89 Mirage turbo w/DSM sidemount, a bottle of Redline Water Wetter in the radiator, and alcohol injetion that starts spraying at 10psi.

If the car IS just running cool, is it unsafe for the car to be pushed hard while the guage is still on C? I'm obviously letting the car warm up, but it's just disturbing to be on C the whole time.

The car doesn't exhibit any other problems.

Yeah, you're thermostat is stuck open. Time for a new one.

I have the same problem with the thermostat, can I just take out the thermostat and let the water flow direct to the engine..??

Does it get cold there? I assume so? So if it does get cold its not suggested as the car has a harder time getting to operating tempature.

You'll probably need some sort of restriction in there so the coolant doesn't flow all the time through the head.

Crap, I thought I posted an update but I guess not:

I took off the thermostat housing, and what did I find? THERE WAS NO THERMOSTAT! Hahaha!

So yeah, if you run without a thermostat, your car will never get into the middle heat range when it's cold out. Pretty much anything under 50F.

$6 later, I put in a new thermostat and gasket, and the car runs perfectly.

Thanks for everyone's help!

ONE THING I NOTICED WHILE DRIVING AROUND WITHOUT A THERMOSTAT:
The car started misfiring under boost. It was exactly like when I had the stock heat range spark plugs in and started upping the boost. Going one heat range colder fixed it before...but this new problem was totally caused by the thermostat.

Since I've installed the thermostat, I've been able to run 13psi of boost again with no misfiring/pulled timing/other issues. So yeah, if your thermostat is bad, drop the $6 and buy a new one.

Hahaha, don't sweat it bro. Car runs like a champ and you've thrown in more than enough parts for me to make use of. The flywheel and clutch are next!
