| Post subject: | 96 eclipse gsx engine removal problem!!!!!!! |
Ok so I bought a 96 gsx auto with a bad block. I have been working on pulling the engine for months now, little by little between school, football and work. So after having everything disconected, I decided to pull the engine and tranny as one peice because after reading articles on dsmtuners it seemed like the easiest way. After disconnecting all the engine/tranny mounts me and my friend began raising the engine using a cherry picker, but the tranny will not clear the passenger side tranny mount, the actual welded bracket on the body of the car. If any of you have pulled motor out of a 2g how did you do it?????? I hope don't have to drop the tranny now even though its only the bolts holding it to the block that are keeping that from happening. |

why don't you just disconnect the trans. Its like 8 bolts dude. And the trans/longblock won't clear it going straight up, you have to bring it up and an angle. Do you have an engine hoist? If not, I would suggest just dropping the trans through the bottom and getting a couple guys to pull the longblock out the top. |

Its hard with an auto no matter what, if you have a leverler or not. Drop the trans off. |

I could be wrong but doesn't the tranny mount unbolt from the car? I know it does on a 1g. There should be 4 rubber plugs in the passenger inner fender well, pop those out and I think 4 14mm bolts hold the mount on. I'm a 1g guy so again I am just guessing here. |

no, i think it's welded on to the 2g's. have you checked with 2gnt yet? also, we did remove an engine and tranny from a 2g a while ago, but it was hell to get out... we tipped it pretty steep with the engine up and the tranny down and eventually worked it's way out, but it was hard as hell... |

Yeah the mount is indeed welded. I'm just going to have to drop the trans out the bottom. Is there any thing I should be carful of or watch out for when dropping it. Thanks for the help guys |

Yeah don't crush yourself! Those auto trannies are alot heavier than manual boxes. Have fun learning. |

your gonna have to adjust the chains on your engine lift. Are you sure that motor mount is welded there. If you look behind the passenger tire you dont see 4 holes in the shape of a box with either 14mm or 17mm bolts? Covering the holes may be 4 black caps that need to be removed. |

I would pull the tranny out first. Makes it alot easier to get everything out. Thats stupid that they welded the tranny mount on. 1g's are so much easier to work on than 2g's. Good luck. |

you should have just unbolted the cross member and dropped the whole motor and trans from the bottom. ive done it on every 7 bolt to 6 bolt swap ive ever done. |

I have worked on numerous 2g's auto and 5 speed and there is a secret to it Drop the motor as a WHOLE in the car down three inches or so level the engine side ( timing) in the air and push the tranny down, the motor will be angled and will be able to be pulled out, take your time... after a while you'll be able to pull a motor and put the new ones in in about a day |
