| Post subject: | Death Smoke!! |
My buddy has a 1990 Turbo Talon and last weekend it started smoking oil in the worst way at idle.. Never smokes underboost... just at idle and between shifts. When the car is cold like after sitting all night... it wont smoke untill it warms up to operating temp. After checking the key things... we still couldnt figure out what could be causing this.... so we just let it buck for a couple days and it stopped smoking for about a week and started up again last night.... exact same symptoms. Were pretty sure its before the turbo because you can see it on the plugs. Thanks for all comments/ suggestions |

Hey i am the friend..(the owner of the talon)... and apparently the plugs dont look bad so never mind that part... i thought they were too brown but i asked a tech and he said they looked normal.... so maybe it is the turbo??? but are these signs normally of a turbo? |

Maybe a pcv valve isn't working and you're getting positive crankcase pressure which is screwing up the ring seal on the pistons. |

Well i thought the same thing too... because i disconnected my pcv system the first time it was smoking and it seemed to stop about half hour after that.... i drove it with it dissconnected for a day and recconcted it and it went a week and started smoking again but only for one day this time... since then ive installed a Starion oil seperator.... and no smoke yet.... but i guess well see... maybe its turbo???? |

I would agree on valve seals. My talon did it especially bad if the car would sit and idle and then when you finally stepped on the gas, clouds of oil smoke would emit. Problem solved when the head had a valvejob and new seals. |

leaky valve stem seals are great - they lubricate your pistons for startup |

Well i want to think its valve seals too.... but i have hard time thinking that due to it being intermitten.... if a seal goes... it goes does it not?? it wont just leak when ever it wants you would think?? or i am i missing somthing? |

you should be able to find out by doing a leakdown test someone correct me if im wrong? |

I would say NO to the intermittent thing, but lets try this: Let your car idle for 5 mins straight, get in, give it a few good revs, and look behind you. Report your findings. FYI: My head had about 80K mi on it and the seals went to crap. You have a stock turbo, correct? How many miles are on everything? Only way Ive seen 14B/16G's fail is when the bearings get so worn the wheel contacts the housing. Not to say the oil seals cant fail, just that I dont think its very likely based on the symptoms you list. The leakdown test will tell you if youre leaking past your rings, or if you have a problem with valves sealing. Leaky umbrella seals cant be found on a leakdown though. While doing leakdown...If you had bad rings, you could pull the oilcap and feel air leaking out while under pressure, or if you had a burned exhaust valve, you would feel air coming out the exhaust (know from experience here) Not sure on intake valve, but assuming you could feel air leaking out the intake piping. |
