Hey,
I have an 89 colt gt. 270 000km'sand in great shape. Never missed a beat and pulled hard. Thing is I did the 63 turbo, injectors, mani, ecu, mas. Runs and pulls hard but does not like to start.

What can it be?

The caps are not leaking and the injectors where cleaned and tested.

If the car sits for an hour it fires up great, but the longer it sits the harder it is to start.

In the morning I have to crank for almost ever.

It kind of sputters once it starts as well. but clears up quick.

how long since you've replaced the battery?

Just got the car last fall, but it looks like it is pretty new. I think it has something to do with the 63 stuff cause it was fine befor.

On the front of the thermostat assembly is a coolant temperature sensor.

It goes bad and the ECU sees the incorrect temperature reading of -56 degrees or so making it extremely difficult to start the car

Replace that sensor and you're good to go :)

Just elaborating on Mr. Hyde's message.
The coolant sensor is used to give the ecu a measure of the engines temperature, if the engine is say -62(it's max) it will think the air is MUCH denser then it really is. We all know, cold air is denser, with the stock air flow sensor and the temp sensor, the ecu makes the calculation and puts the right amount of fuel for that volume of air.
Basically, you're starting rich.

ok, that sounds more like it with that beginning sputter too...

Good thought Geoff. I didn't even think to go at it from that angle...

I was thinking maybe O-rings for injectors and/or fuel pump not sealing? This could allow the fuel to bleed down between starts.

Boostin,

your problem is identical to what I'm experiencing on my 4g15 after adding the 4g37 injectors, MAF, and ECU.

I can't figure it out. All i know is I'm running fairly rich.

whats with everyones coolant temp sensors failing all of a sudden?

It could be a stuck open injector that is guzzling fuel into one cylinder. Obviously, that cylinder will be overly rich on startup while the others starve for fuel due to the fuel line bein depressurized by that time. What do the plugs look like BTW?

If it started right after you installed the parts wouldn't it logically have to be one of the parts you just put in. I would put the 1.6 ecu back in first. If that doesn't correct it then put the stock injectors and MAS back in at the same time. Greg

OK, Here is the latest news.

I cycle the key to run about 10 times then the car starts way better.

As sonn as it starts i let it run for about 5 seconds then turn it off. I will go to start it, and it starts perfectly.

In conclusion, Ithink I am loosing fuel pressure.

Injectors where cleaned and tested and came up perfect.

I suspect that there is a check valve in the tank that leaks pressure back or maybe the presure regulator leaks.

Check valve is built into the fuel pump, and do you have a spare pressure regulator (even a 4g15 one) to swap in?

Any of you guy's think it might be the air flow sensor?
I should test the temperture sensor in there.

Most efi cars fuel pump turns on when you turn the key to "run". Try turning it to "run" and leaving it there for 5-10 seconds before starting. My guess is that the pump is dying.
