| Post subject: | Crank angle sensor help |
Sorry this question is not directly related to colts but i do need some help. I am thinking about running DSM fuel injection on my 89 mighty max. I figure it all should work along as I can mount all of the sensors? Now for the problem. My engine the all mighty 2.6 has a distributor in it right now. What do I need to do? Can I put in a fuel injected distributor or do I need the dsm angle sensor? I am not sure what signals the dsm one puts out verses a normal dissy. Please help Thanks Mike |

DSM doesn't have a distributer per say. |

I know, it has an crank or cam angle sensor. |

hes wondering if some fuel injected distributor (ie. 2.4) will work or if he has to somehow ghetto rig the cam angle sensor onto the distributor. He is going to be running a Mitsubishi Magna intake manifold and fabbing up the DSM electronics to work on it. |

If the sensor in the EFI distributor uses an optical sensor with both "Home" and "Trigger" outputs you should be able to make it work. In that case you may have to modify/replace the cutter wheel with a DSM one. You will still need the DSM coil pack and igniter to drive the spark plugs in "wasted spark" mode. All the distributor is used for is the engine position sensor. You may also need to mod the distributor body to get the ignition timing calibrated correctly as chances are there will not be enough adjustment. |

There is really 2 styles of distributors on Mitsus I have seen. There is the really long style with the gear on the end seen in 4g15 8v engines and the more nub style that mount on a 4g15 12v unit which style does the mighy max have if I see pics of it I can probably help... |

I do not have any pics but would assume that it is the long style. It mounts in the head the same way as a 12 valve. Right now the truck has a 2.6 carb dist in it but I have been told that the 2.4 efi dist fits in to the head. Any help is appreciated so thanks. Mike |

Sounds alot like the 8V distributor that comes out of the head in the direction of the firewall. Am I correct in assuming this? If that is the case then you have more possibilities for modifying things more easily. IMO |

Actually, I recall that the 8v EFI 4G15 does use optical style sensors with both home and trigger signals. The only problem is that I never found a way to pull them apart (to make modifications) without destroying the sensor in the process. |

It would be easier to go with a standalone then to try and cobble together a factory system other than TBI. You can take a TBI setup from the conquest. You may try www.tristarion.com for more help since they have experience with that motor. |

I know this doesn't solve your problem, but you could swap in a 4g63t |

I was planing to do a 4g64 with the 63 head but gave up due to money. Which i would rather spend on something like a cool car. |

I kinda have a similar question. I'm goin to be running a megasquirt standalone ECU but for the ignition I have to use the ford EDIS system which means that I would have to mount the trigger wheel like the electromotive somehow....it the mitsu system at all similar to the ford EDIS system or is there any way that I could retro wire the system to work??? I figured out how to use the coils in the system and both systems use a bosch ignition module just the dsm uses the cam position sensor whereas the edis uses the 36-1 crank trigger and VR SENSOR.....any ideas?????? |

Just mount the trigger wheel to the crank pulley and fab a bracket for the VR sensor and call it a day. Nothing gives the same signal in the DSM. Mike |
